I just bought a 1970 vw yesterday.  I have tons of questions.
First where is the cigarette lighter or do i have to install one. If so how?
Another is i have a toggle switch dirctly center under the underside of the main dashboard.  What is it for.  Another what can be understood from my VIN number.  That well be a good start for now.

Most likely you will have to install your own "auxillary plug" as they are now called. The toggle switch sounds like it's something the Previous Owner (PO) installed. there was a toggle switch on the left hand side of the steering wheel under the dash for the rear window defrost (on models that had them).

About all that can be understood from your VIN on a 1970 is that it is a 1970 beetle. you can also calculate based on a range of VINs when your car was produced... but there are easier ways to do this, with the sticker on the B pillar and the production plate under the hood. You can also send the VIN off to Germany for a birth certificate... they can tell you a lot more from your VIN than you or anyone else will be able to figure out on your own.

next question?

Buy a Bentley manual for your bug.  A John Muir Idiots guide is a pretty good read too

My cigar liter is  positioned above my right knee in my 70 .  its really under there.

i wondered what the toggle switch was for,  i thought is was like a ignition kill switch or something.  thx VWgirl
