The new VW Microbus will go on sale in 2005 for a base sticker of - hold on - $28,000, according to Reuters and this week's Autoweek.  Check out Autoweek.com for the whole story.  They will be built in Transporter city, Hanover, Germany.  You can get a 230-HP V6, a folding rear table, rearview camera, rubber-mat flooring, and a DVD game station with 7-inch foldaway screen.  No word yet on a camper.

In other news, the LMP-675 class winner at the 24 hours of LeMans was a VW-powered Reynard-Lehmann chassis.  It finished 19th overall.  Finishing a best-of-the-rest 4th (behind the dominant Audis) was a (VW-owned) Bentley EXP Speed 8 prototype.

Just checked out the new VW Microbus & to me it looks kinda like something Frakenstien's monster would be driving . Plus I think they really need to go back to the drawing board .

I don't even think Frankinstien's monster would drive it!  With the New Beetle they did a very good job of capturing the personality of the old Beetle and morphing it into an ultra-modern car.  If that's what they were trying to do with the new Microbus they failed.  That is one butt-ugly vehicle!  Every since the first pictures were released, enthusiast (supposedly their target market) have been redesigning it to give it the same retro effect that the New Beetle captured.

Belt-line trim that comes to a V in the front with a large VW logo in the upper center of the hood and round headlights . . . that's all they need to go from "What the heck were you thinking!" to "Wow!"  Without some cosmetic redesigning of the front end I predict that it will be a total flop.
