New Fridolin?

Volkswagen's eT! concept "research vehicle" could be a platform for in all sorts of urban business vehicles - mail trucks for instance.

“eT! is a pure electrically powered transporter that systematically transfers E-mobility to the area of commercial use,” says Dr. Rudolf Krebs, Group Manager for Electric Traction at Volkswagen AG. And continues: “As a transport specialist, the eT! is advancing to become the automotive building block for an innovative, future-oriented logistics concept, which not only drives with zero emissions in urban areas – thanks to its electric wheel hub motors – but also offers maximum freedom in maneuvering and turning as well as optimal utilization of the vehicle’s interior space. If ‘refueled’ with electricity generated from renewable energy sources, the eT! can indeed be operated with zero emissions. Naturally, the eT! is not a vehicle which – unlike the Golf or up! with an electric motor – could become available very soon. But we must make plans today for what the world of lightweight commercial vehicles might look like starting in the second half of this decade, including with regard to electrical drives.”

VW better have a set of batteries from hell to be used as a postal mail truck.
How many Newby VW fans know that the electric hub motors were  invented by Dr. Porsche during WW-1 for a mutli-car road train to carry cannons and supplies over the Alps  for the German troops.. I think about every 5th car carried a gas Gen. to supply the electric power. Tain't nothing new about hybrids wouldn't you say.

Porche recently built a replica of one of Dr. Porsche's early cars.  It was a hybred with front hub motors and a generator driven by a one cylinder gas engine.  I'll dig around and see if I can find the video of them describing it and driving it around.

This isn't the video I was looking for, but it shows the car I was talking about.  The replica was build using turn of the century (1900) tools and techniques to make it as accurate as possible.  This car pre-dates the hybrids RetBugtech was talking about by several years.  The original was built in 1900.

Another interesting fact that a lot of folks don't know . . . most Diesel locomotives are hybrids.  The wheels are driven by electric motors . . . the electricity is supplied by generators (actually, most modern versions use alternators) driven by the Diesel engines.

Exactly what that has to do with the "new Fridolin" that started this post, I'm not sure . . . but it was an interesting rabbit to chase.   ;D

This is very true . Dr Porsche 's  road train was more like the diesel/elec. loco's built today which seems to me is more practical than one petrol engine and one auto. If one engineer could have complete control of a given amount of underpowered petrol engines of the day there is no telling how many  cars it could pull on the level or up Mtn. passes. Even very powerful steam loco's of the day had a very hard time dealing with Mtn. grades of 4-5% on main lines.
I have no clue what this has to do with the ugly Fridolin other than total electric cars ain't going to get it .

Total electric will work great IF the electricity can be produced on-board, on-demand from a hydrogen fuel cell at an affordable price.  The technology exist today . . . it just cost WAY too much and the infrastructure to economically produce, store and distribute hydrogen on a widespread basis doesn't exist.  But then, I guess that could be considered a hybrid too.
