new exhaust on...(header and quiet muffler) head leak?

« on: June 05, 2008, 07:54:33 PM »
ok, I got my new type 4 exhaust put on today on my 74bus (my old one had more holes in it than a block of swiss cheese) and now I notice that the left side of my motor sounds lke it has an exhaust leak of some sort... I can also see exhaust coming out straight down under the left side of the motor... it appears from as close as I could get without choking to death that I believe the exhaust is coming out where the heater box bolts to the head itself. the only other thing I can think of would be a loose head but surely the motor would be running like crap if that was the case... I decided to spray some penetrating oil on the nuts that hold the heater box to the head and let it work itself in while the motor cools and see if anyone had any ideas...

More than likely You will have to take the heater box off and replace the copper rings ( gaskets) in the exhaust ports. They can be a bitch to get out sometimes so be careful not to damage the head.
With the box off, take a good look at the surface of the 2 pipes that go up into head.  You may have to file them flat as they often burn a notch in the surface (common) and it will still leak no matter how tight you get it.
Also be very careful with the mounting nuts. The studs can twist off in a heartbeat if you get heavy handed.   If you break one you don't know how much trouble you will be in.
It was a sorry, sorry way to install a heater box.  The copper rings are barely crushable if at all.
The box may be just loose, but I really doubt it.
       Good luck

I'm afraid I can agree from experience. I used a knife sharpening stone to file a smooth face to the pipe and some exhaust paste. No more leaks.
