New Beetle Turbo 2000 - what do you VFolks think?

« on: December 09, 2001, 02:53:59 AM »
I went to check out a 2000 New Beetle Turbo at the VW dealer...

I kinda like it but its very PLAIN....
It has Steel Wheels no sunroof, no leather, like I said very plain, almost a GL.....
they started off asking 1750.00 (should read 17,500) ???
Then I called them and asked what is the least they would take for it? they said 1650.00, so I told them I would have to pass....
I got a call today (Sat.) from the salesperson asking me what I would be willing to give, I told them I wasnt sure if I wanted the car, I told them to give me until Monday, they kinda put the pressure on and said that they had 3 others interested in the car and it probably wouldnt be around, So I told them I might consider the car for 1400.00 (should read 14,000)...
That pretty much shut them up.....
I went by tonight and the car is still there....SURPRISE!!!  :sneaky2:

What would you guys do?
Like I said the car is plain but I could live with it for the price I offered....
I have an ad in the paper for my car so I guess I will see if anyone is interested,  Im paying through the nose 12.9 so if my car doesnt sell I may just refinace, forget the turbo and drive it....:sarcasm:

Perk,
Heres what Edmunds says a 2000 NB Turbo with no frills goes for:

Total   Trade-in       Private Party      Dealer Retail
           $12,144       $13,489     ----> $14,775 <----

Certified Used Vehicle  $15,675 (its not a cert. car)

Kelly Blue Book says dealer price is around $17,000... but it also gives my car a better trade-in value than VW of C quoted so these car pricing sites or books are just a guide....
It would be hard for me to pay 16,500 when they just sold a  nicer Turbo for the same price...
Yeah, I know thats not how they see it.....:sarcasm:
If they sell the Turbo for 16,500,  good for them...
thats just where I would like to be in a car that doesnt have a sunroof, steel wheels and no leather.

mean ol' db
(poor lil ol dealers cant even make a buck with him around)   :p

oooooohhhhhh.

you originally said: "$1750.00"
(one thousand, seven hundred and fifty) dollars.

this changes the whole picture.
amazing how much difference one little "." can make.

              :withstupid:

It was suppose to be 17,500 and I offered 14,000....

I offered 14,000....

using the "silver one" as a guide, may be a mistake.

just because someone got a good (great) deal, doesn't always mean that is the norm.

doesn't any dealer usually just look at the dollars and cents (sense) when doing a deal?
maybe they are/were into the silver one for less.
maybe the guy/gal that traded in the "white one" was a harder negotiater and the dealer has a bigger nut to crack on that one.

:questions: i don't know, but it sounds like it ("white one") is a little bit on the sparsely *optionified* side. are you really willing to trade based the turbo option only and lose some other features & options in the process?

i for one would hold out :lookaround: . there should be lots of 2000s coming in off lease in the next few months. your 99 (assuming it's the one in classifieds forum) has lost most of it's yearly/model devalue until probably the middle/late of 2002 (whenever the 2003s come out), therefore it would probably make better financial sense to keep looking & find a better example of what you want (including the better trim level).

that my 4 & 1/2 cents worth.

of course, $14,000 is pretty cheap and would be hard to turn down.

Personally I wouldn't do it! Judging by the hesitancy you seem to exibit just picked up through your typing you aren't happy that it doesnt' have options that are important to you, even if you are willing to overlook those right NOW because you want a turbo they will GRATE at you later, trust me, and 2 years from now you will want to sell this car because you have no sunroof!

I'd hold out, you will surely find a better deal, even by looking in the papers than that.  And don't sell yourself short, get all the options you want on the car, especially the ones that aren't easy to add in later.

I've always held the theory that I'd rather have a step down in car with ALL the available goodies as opposed to the next level car that is stripped cause I couldn't afford toys on it, options make the car in some cases IMO.

Im not sure what to think about VW of Chatta...
First they told me they were getting a Snap Orange Turbo in and I was 2-3 on the list but that it might be 3 or 4 weeks before it comes in, being very vague about it....
so I called Al Johnson to see what they would be able to get, they had just sold the Snap Orange 5-speed already but that they would call other dealers to see if they could get any Turbo off another Dealer lot....
So I called VW of Chatta's sales manager to confirm that they really were getting a Snap Orange, and also so I wouldnt lead AL JOHNSON on.....
The Manager of VW of C,  told me,  "Well to be honest "NO", we wont be getting one....." !!?!?!?!?:questions:
He mentioned the 2000 used Turbo and I said it was way too high for the car he said its an asking price, offered it to me for 16,500, I told him I would pass, thank you.....
Thats when I got a call the next day from a salesperson,  saying that I had called them wanting to get a better price on the car or some Bull Shoot???? WHAT?? :questions:

I repeated what I had told the Sales manager, that the car was too high for it to be a such a plain car and I wasnt interested in paying 16,500....
Thats when they put on the pressure and said "WE NEED TO KNOW IF YOU WOULD EVEN BE INTERESTED IN THIS CAR" and I told them I would have to think about it????
The sales person said they had 3 others wanting it??? (I was thinking, if you have someone else interested, why are we having this lil talk? :sneaky2:
So I low balled them...told them 14,000 would get me more interested,  good day.....
I went by the VW of Chatta lot....guess what,  its still there...SURPRISE!....:dozingoff:
Like someone said why trade my 2.0 with leather and other goodies, on what is basically a GL with a Turbo engine????
The car would have to be a steal....
FYI the 2000 was bought from another dealer, so Im sure they're rich in it....
I was just using the Silver NB as an example why I wouldnt pay 16,500 for a plain jane, when theres nicer ones to be had if I wait....

I put an ad in the paper for my car and I will see what happens, Its a bad time to try to sell a car????:lookaround:
plus I dont know if anyone will want to foo with waiting on paperwork for my car 7-10 days if they pay cash??...
If I dont get any bites on my car Im just going to keep it for now, maybe try to refinance it at a lower rate and trade it for a 6 speed with 180 hp in the fall...... :inlove:

UPDATE:
The white, 2000 Turbo Beetle is still sitting over at VW of Chatta as of Friday 14...
I cant say Im surprised!

SIDE NOTE:
I saw another plain Jane Turbo, it was a 99 with 51,000,  it was silver, this one is even plainer than the white 2000, it has cloth interior...they wanted 13,500...
Whats the deal with People buying turbos with steel wheels, no sunroofs and cloth interiors?? :questions:

All these cars that you are finding the people did the same thing you are thinking about doing.  They found a turbo settled for it even though it didn't have all the options that they wanted then got a year or so down the road and traded it in for one they really wanted in the first place, and most likely lost a few thousand dollars.  Wait for want you really want Shasta and I have settled for a car before and within a few months we were mad at ourselves for it.
