New Beetle Cabrio Spotted - They're heeeere!

...this from veemer.com...

They're heeeeere!

A member of the NewBug Mailing list has spotted a New Beetle Cabrio (NBC) in VA!

Edmunds has driven and reviewed the New Beetle Cabrio.
Article At a Glance:
"First Impression: The New Beetle convertible offers cute retro styling, tight build quality and European driving dynamics -- everything except acceleration. For the complete package, we suggest holding your horses until later in the year when the turbo model debuts. "
Pricing: "Initial pricing (including destination) starts at $21,000 for the GL and moves up to $22,400 for the GLS. The belated 1.8T models (to be introduced in the spring of 2003) will list at $24,650 for the GLS 1.8T with the loaded-up GLX going for $26,100."

There's a New Beetle Cabrio for sale on ebay. (At the time of this posting it is at $17,700 with 7 days left.)

Also, someone paid over $4,000 for a spot on a NBC waiting list on ebay! I sure hope they didn't think they were getting a real deal on a NBC.

Travis, Anthony, and myself spotted at NB Convertible heading south on I-75 while we were in Dade City for FL Bug Jam, but we couldn't tell for sure if it was "real" one or a sedan that had been customized.  I also think I heard Lamar and Cindy mention spotting one while we were in FL.

I'm not a new car fan by any means. I haven't seen a new car in over 10 years that (to me) justifies the price tag . . . but that is one cool car!  And it probably has heat . . . and air . . . and maybe even a working gas gauge.  That's tempting!  I wonder how long the waiting list is @ VWofC? . . .

Last time I was out there (couple of months ago) there wasn't a waiting list and they were asking me if I wanted to be the first. I had to say "Yes, but..."

I saw the tv commercial recently...they don't show the car. It can be seen at VW's site here.

We did see one coming down the Causeway from Clearwater back to Tampa.  Perfect picture of the convertible by the water, however, we didn't get one.  Anyway it was a dark blue with a black top.  We weren't sure if it was a 2003 or one that had been modified but it did have the turn signal lights on the side mirrors.  It looked really good but there was something about how the top sat on top of the back of the car that looked kind of odd to us.  Looking forward to see one up close!!!  :D

Why is VWOA calling it a "convertible"?  It's a cabriolet (three-layer lined top)!  Are they afraid we'll confuse it with the Golf Cabrio???  Well, at least it's built by Karmann.  They need to put a badge on the right side, like all other Karmann cabriolets.  They're missing a great nostalgic touch, there.  OK, it wouldn't keep me from owning one.    :D   I do like the chrome strip around the beltline.  Autoweek said they changed the driving position farther inboard to reduce the wind buffeting. ???

BTW, Autoweek has an article this week on it, also. autoweek.com

So, there's a distinction between cabriolet and convertible?

I pleased as well to hear they were built by Karmann as well, and I agree about the badging. I'll bet folks will be adding badges after the fact... I would!

Yes, a cabriolet has a folding top with a lining and headliner, so inside you hardly notice the difference between it and a coupe, and a convertable is just the outer layer over a frame (like most domestics).  One of my old ads said it took, I think, 2 and 1/2 hours for 3 or 4 workers to install one Ghia top.  It took me about 2 and 1/2 weeks! :p

I went out to VW of Chattanooga today and snapped some pictures of the New Beetle Cabriolet today. Here's one:

Beauty, eh?

There are more in my Gallery on www.veemer.com.

I would have put them in the Gallery on volksfolks.com, but I couldn't remember the login. :D
