Need Help Finishing up '83 Westfalia

« on: April 27, 2015, 02:32:28 PM »
My husband and I bought an air-cooled '83 Westfalia a couple of years ago. At the time, we were a bit naive about the older VWs and were misled into buying one in "rebuilt" condition, with everything working fine.  We broke down twice just trying to get it home from Greenville, SC (ended up paying to have it towed all the way from Atlanta!) and it has been sitting in our driveway ever since.  My husband has done a fair amount of work on it himself….replaced all 4 pistons and cylinders, lapped the valves, etc but we just don't have the time to finish up the assembly of the additional engine components...tin, alternator, air intake, etc. We are looking for someone willing and able to get it all finished up and put back together as soon as possible….really hoping to have it done by the end of May. Anyone interested, or at least have recommendations?

That is a bit of a tall order! I would definitely want to have a VW knowledgable mechanic working on it. I would maybe check with Travis at Bavarian Auto and see if that is something they could do. You could try some of the shops listed on our Local VW Shops and Service page (http://www.volksfolks.org/vwshops) and see if any of them would want to tackle the project.

I am assuming it is an air-cooled version? If so, it is kind of an in between model. It's not far enough along to be in the water cooled guys' court and too new to have a huge following of DIY air-cooled techs. If it continues like most other air cooled mechanics, there will not be a lot of support for them. The best advice is to learn how to work on it yourself, which it sounds like that's how you started. The internet and a bentley manual can be your biggest help.

Yes, air-cooled. We've talked to a couple of guys who have been recommended to us, and they were willing, but they live further out of the way than we'd like since we'll have to haul it on a trailer.  Was just hoping we could find someone through this forum who happens to live closer to Chattanooga.  The reason we are looking for someone to finish it for us is because we don't have the time.  We are possibly moving out of the country in a few months and are trying to finish up our house as well (we are in the process of flipping it).  My husband also has a full time job so…just not enough hours in the day.  We have the Bentley manual etc, and would just finish ourselves if it were possible.

Are you sure it's an '83? Vanagons were air-cooled from '80-'81 and since '82 they were all water-cooled.

Yes, I'm sure.  They changed from air-cooled to water-cooled in the middle of '83...some are air-cooled, some aren't.  Ours has no radiator and is, for sure, an '83 because I just looked up the VIN on it the other day for insurance purposes.
