Need a good muffler shop

« on: September 22, 2011, 03:52:52 PM »
I was just told my middle muffler needs to either be replaced or removed (Of course.  Why would it still be good?).  Leaning towards removal.

Question 1:  Replace or remove?

Question 2:  Good shop?

List of items still to be replaced on this car:  getting shorter by the day.

List of items ALREADY replaced on this car:  three times longer than list A.

it would be cheaper to remove but the car will sound a little louder with it removed,  used to take mine to maxi on dayton blvd but my buddy there passed away and i have since bought a welder

Allow me to not answer your question while giving several facts.  I don't know where to tell you to go for the exhaust work, but I would advise the following:

Keep with close to OEM parts if possible.  Further, I would reccomend NOT eliminating the mid muffler.  They do A LOT to reduce noise, and more importantly the resonation of the exhaust inside the car.  I had an exhaust which replaced the mid muffler with a straight, mild dampening muffler on the Golf, and it would give you a headache in certain rev ranges.  I remember finally deciding to take it back off of the car following a trip up Monteagle Mountain.   ;)

That being said, you should be safe with any shop, just make sure of what they are putting on there.  VWs don't like universal Catalytic converters, but I don't know that the mid-muffler is a big deal outside of just making sure that you leave it on there.

Just my two cents.   :)

Justin had his removed on his 98 New Beetle . . . I couldn't ride in the thing more than a couple of miles after that.  We had the one our 96 Passat replaced with the closest universal unit that Maxi in Ft. Oglethorpe had.  It's a little louder at some rpms, but it's not bad . . . and was A LOT cheaper than the OEM muffler.

I remember the beetle that Zen mentioned... worked on it a number of times, and Yess, it was really loud going down the road.

It was loud, but it wasn't really the "loud" that would get to you . . . it resonated at a frequency that would make you head feel like it was going to explode.  I tried riding in it with ear plugs once . . . they took the volume down to an acceptable level, but the frequency was something that went through your body.

Thanks everyone.  Sounds like I just need to replace the stupid thing.  It's only money, right?   :P

Yep, it's only money.  You can't take it with you.  And you try to hang on to it too long, Uncle Sam will figure out a way to get his hands on it.  You might as well spend it on making driving your car and fun experiance.   8)
