My new storage shed... - God help me, I had to have it...

« on: January 13, 2004, 06:29:01 PM »
Dammed eBay!

I've always thought the Panels were neat (and the Station Wagons, campers, and trucks), and a double door, too!   I really am going to put some stuff from the garage in it for the time being.  I figure I'd pay this much for a storage building and those don't have wheels!

Anyone know what one of these weighs (minus the engine)?  I'm planning to tow it home with the camper.

A split screen double door panel bus!  SWEET!   :D

Keith Seume's book "The Beetle, A comprehensive guide to the world's most popular car" has a feature page that shows a 1955 23 window ragtop deluxe and under the specifications it gives the "Dry Weight" as 2432 pounds.

So even minus engine and seats/trim it would be close to 2000 lbs., huh.  I think we're going to try to borrow Misty's dad's truck instead of the bus.  Planning to go Sunday to scenic Meridian, Miss. to get it.

Yep, my guess would be about the same as yours.  In it's present state I'd guess it'll weigh about a ton, plus or minus 100 pounds.   :)

The using the pickup deal fell through, so mighty Bob the camper will be dragging the bus home.  I went through it and put in the thermostat flaps that some PO had removed, added the exhaust heat shield and removed the intake winterizing covers, so let's see if it runs cooler!  I also put on this air scoop that's supossed to lower the trans. temp about 30-40 degrees, according to the "inventor".  We'll see ???
Wish me luck!

That was a long and, fortunately, uneventful trip!  No cooling problems even when towing.  I was more worried about the tires on the Panel than anything, but they held air all the way home.  There are a few pics in the members rides section of the gallery.
