Is it standard practice that a shop not cover a customers car? I saw Raby does, but he's always got the best of everything.

Garage keepers insurance. We have it, anyone with a shop would be crazy to not have it. That being said, it cost money and there are places that cannot afford to keep it up. I don't know if that is what happened here but without it the responsibility should fall on the shop if the vehicle is in their care. Every vehicle that gets left outside is a chance being taken, a calculated risk for us. If people know you work on VW's and they watch your shop then it's only a matter of time if you leave a easy pick outside. It doesn't get much easier than a baja engine to grab...regardless of what really happened no one sould ever leave a baja outside, nice or not. We only have room for around 12 cars inside our building if I stack em on the racks. I have left my own truck and car at the shop outside because there wasn't enough room to keep all the high risk vehicles safe, have gone so far as to bring home a car and put it in my own garage to avoid a potential problem (a whole seperate risk taken). My insurance would cover a theft BUT if it could be avoided to begin with that is my choice. If someone left their car on the lot without our consent and something happened that would be a different story, but that isn't the what happened here...As a shop owner, you have to be on the lookout for any potential problem from the run of the mill crooks and from the OWNERS who want something for nothing, who would steal their own stuff to burn you. Sure sucks but it is reality.
