Looking for info. on "Appalachian Auto Parts Co."

« on: January 01, 2009, 12:55:35 PM »
Has anybody ever heard of the Appalachian Auto Parts Co?  I have a really nice machinist's scale that looks to be from the 1950's-early60's with their name, address and phone number on it ... (1902 University Ave, 2-8182 (yes, that's right)

Was it a chain or a stand-alone store?  The only internet reference I could find is they were involved in a price fixing lawsuit in May of 1965 brought before the 7th circuit law (jurisdiction Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana) - not a very Appalachian part of the country.

I did several searches and other than the 1965 lawsuit, I came up dry as well.  Does the scale have a patent number on it?  If so, you can go to the Patent and Trade Mark Office web site and download a copy of the original patent.  I don't know if it will tell you anything you want to know, but I've found some interesting information by looking up the patent information on old tools I've picked up at flea markets and yard sales.

Howdy Zen,

The patent idea is interesting. It's a fine steel rule, 6" long and marked out in 1/32 and 1/10", with a decimal to fractional inch conversion on the back side.  Very nicely made since the text is slightly embossed into the steel and then painted black.

Unfortunately, there is no patent number, only "GUCO 152", which is so vague that the internet search is pretty scary.

Thanks.

Too bad there's no patent #.   :(   It may not help you this time, but this is our tax money at work . . . you might find something interesting at the patent office web site in the future.  Oh yeah, it's free!

Here's an example.  I went to http://www.uspto.gov and did a search for the # that was cast into the hitch arms on an old single wheel trailer I bought a few years ago.  I got this really neat drawing (along with rest of the patent:
