Sad day for a German automotive icon. Karmann is closing its doors.

Very sad to hear. Karmann also built the Crossfire, so that makes three Karmann-built cars I've had. The build quality for the Crossfire is impressive and I appreciate the VW connection, even though its mostly Mercedes. I've thought about putting a Karmann badge on the fender like the Cabrios have. Now I may do it in memory.  :(

Looks like Karmann will live on, thanks to a contract from Volkswagen.

Quote
July 3 (Bloomberg) -- Volkswagen AG awarded a model- development contract of at least 10 million euros ($14 million to Wilhelm Karmann GmbH, Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung reported, without saying where it got the information.

The funds will help the insolvent Osnabrueck, Germany-based car-assembler set up a reorganized company for 1,600 of its workers, the newspaper said. Karmann wants to focus on building electric-powered cars, the newspaper cited Ottmar Hermann, the company's bankruptcy administrator, as saying.

VW is still in talks about "bailing out" Karmann.
