Is There a "Pull-A-Part" type Junk Yard in Chattan

« on: November 25, 2008, 01:07:59 AM »
I've been to Pull-A-Part ( http://www.pullapart.com ) in Atlanta several times and I've never left without several bargains.  This is the ONLY way to buy used parts!!!  The problem is, the two in Atlanta are the closest ones.  Does anyone know of a salvage/junk yard in the Chattanooga area that works the same way (fixed prices, you pull the parts) ?

While I was doing an internet search, (which came up empty) I found a place that has yards like this in CA . . . on their yard tour video, there is an oval window Beetle in the background when they are interviewing the yard manager.  -- http://www.pickyourpart.com/video/?v=0002   8)

I am unaware of one in the Chattanooga area.  However, you can view other locations on that same website that are close, such as Knoxville, Nashville and Birmingham.  I have never been to one and would like to go.  Are their prices close to what they show on their website?

A good friend of mine owns a junk yard and he told me that for insurance reasons they cannot allow the customer to pull their own parts.

I'd love to go to another Pull Apart. It was so hot the last time went, but we should definitely make plans to go again. Does Knoxville, Nashville, or Birmingham have a lot of VWs?

Right now, none of them have the number of VWs that Atlanta South had the last time we went.  There were 15 or 16 air-cooled and too many water-cooled to count that time.  Right now, there are only a handful of VWs at any of the close ones.

On the prices, they are exactly what they show on the web site.  I've been to Atlanta North once and Atlanta South twice.  At Atlanta north, I got a 1.6 EFI Mazada 323 engine, complete from pullys to flywheel, including all the intake, fuel injection, distributor, and exhaust manafold, plus a wiper switch and a double handful of relays from a Buick Reatta.  After tax and core charge it was about $145.  The engine runs like a charm, and doesn't even leak oil!  At Atlanta south, I got a power window regulator and an air filter box for my 96 Passat along with a bunch of other small parts . . . I think I spent about $35 that time.  I left the pipe going from the air filter box to the intake, including the mass airflow sensor attached to the box . . . they didn't charge any extra for it.  The last time I was there, I spent about $110.  For that, I got two good Michilen tires with re-enforced sidewalls mounted on bus wheels (they are the front of Homer and are working great!) . . . I aslo got an inner front bumper for my Passat . . . and a good bus windshield . . . and a set of set belts from an S-10 . . . and some other stuff, just can't think of what it was.

Even if I didn't need any parts, it's a lot of fun just to plunder through a hugh junk yard.  It's about the most fun you can have for a dollar anywhere!  (it cost a dollar to go on the lot).  My only advice is, don't go when it's 100 degrees unless you take A LOT of water!!!  I think Russ, Fred and Kyle can confirm that.
  I just wish there was one in the Chattanooga area!

Bohannons at cloud springs road and 27.  i have had some luck finding stuff for my 98 watercooled beetle.  i have heard from some others that the folks there were rude and overly proud of their "JUNK".  there arent many vws but they have three or four newer wrecked beetles

Field trip?

Most any weekend will work for me . . . I'm off next Monday as well.  I'd rather not go if it's near freezing and the wind is blowing or if it's raining or snowing hard, but other than that, I'm in.   8)

I just looked at the forcast for Atlanta for the next few days . . . the weather is going to be fantastic for a day in the junk yard Friday, Raining on Saturday, Chance of Rain on Sunday, Clear but a little chilly on Monday . . . OR, Raining on Friday, great weather Saturday, Sunday, and Monday . . . both of those forcast came from the weather channel's web site!

Atlanta North and Atlanta South both have 16 Volkswagens on the lot right now.  I think I'm going to try to go Saturday if it's not raining . . . Sunday or Monday if Saturday is a rain-out.  I'd like to go early enough to hit both the North and South yards.

Stumbled across this guys stuff, it will not pull up with a search for dasher, but he has some things I think that you will be interested in.

 If someone had just flashed that picture in front of me for a couple of seconds, I would have sworn it was my Dasher!  Mine is missing the same piece of trim on the back door.  The magnet on the hood is (I think) a VW logo, but it's about the same size as the club logo magnet I have in the same place on my hood.  On closer inspection, that one has better paint, less rust, different wheel covers and a sun roof . . . but then, mine didn't cost $2000!    I don't think I'd be interested in that one.  I've got a diesel Rabbit to cure my craving for a diesel VW and besides, one Dasher is enough.  Just ask RetBugtech!

Check out the parts, he has a whole font end for a dasher with a diesel engine.  You could get that one andput it in your dasher and have a "great"  dasher...

HMMMM  DASHER AND THE WORD GREAT>.....dont exactly go together.  they should named the car Slacker or Crapper......that is much more correct i think.   what an odd, unattractive, mechanically and poorly designed car.   Sorry Zen but you know what I am talking about....fuses, fuel pumps, radiators, waterpumps....wasnt the head gasket the last to go out on it?  should stick with the rabbit,  any water cooled with MT and 2.0, or air cooled stuff.  ....the vr6 is a good one too

Rick charged me a whole $300 for the car.  I spent another couple hundred on it, and did a little rewiring on the fuel pump circuit, then drove it for over a year.  It's made an excellent storage shed since last April.  I've got about a hundred dollars worth of parts that will let me put it back on the road again.  In my book, that's a pretty darn good car!   8)

On the other hand, I seem to recall an old GTI that "someone" bought for over $1000 that had a bad water pump . . . and a hole in the gas tank . . . and a broken motor mount . . . and a ton of wiring problems . . . and he had to rope someone into driving him 400 miles to pick it up and taking 16 hours to get it baby it back home.  Yeah, THAT was a MUCH better vehicle than "an odd, unattractive, mechanically and poorly designed" Dasher!
