Will it make to El Paso? Will it make to the store around the corner? Will it make the trip to the next town? Famous last words, but I always say "There is only one way to find out!"
Last year I loaded up Homer the SuperBus, picked up Kyle at his place and hooked a small trailer full of his camping gear behind Homer and headed to Effingham, IL. About 30 miles away from Effingham a rocker arm came off and Homer went from a 4 cyliinder to a two cylinder . . . within 10 minutes we had him fixed up and headed on up the interstate. We made the rest of the trip without a glitch.
I headed to the Southeastern Bug Fair (Taccoa) a few years ago and got stuck in 4th gear sitting at the light on Cloud Springs Road and I-75. I had to slip the clutch quite a bit to get onto the interstate, but I made it to Taccoa! However, the last 5 miles I was coasting down the backside of a mountain with a blown engine ('cause I coudn't downshift to third going up the mountain). I got a club member to pull Homer into the camping area with a tow rope and everyone pitched in with tools, money and labor . . . Sunday evening when the show ended, Homer hit the road with a new engine and all 4 gears.
One of the neatest things I've learned about driving old VWs is that you will ALWAYS get help if you do break down. I broke down on the side of I-75 just north of I-10 (about 40 miles south of the GA/FL line) in a Chevy pickup . . . I was there trying to rig a U-Joint back together for several hours. 10,000 cars past and no one slowed down. If I'm driving Homer, I can pull over the to side of a back road to run in the wood and answer a call of nature and 20 people will be stopped and wanting to know if I'm having trouble when I get back a minute later.
