Far out.

I just ran a search for "Eurovan" and came into this long dead discussion about "old" guys, haight ashbury (did i spell that right?)  cunsumption and who has a clue.

Funny really.  Who has a clue?  I just "ended" a job, a textile job, okay htey asked me to leave. This was one of the few textile jobs left and I am happy to be gone.  This place was using manufacturing in Red China and Thailand, they ship goods halfway round the earth in order to undercut American manufacturers.  The companies buy it because it is cheap, it is commercial.   The CEO's get Billion Dollar bonuses, American workers that are underpaid at $50k get compared to Chinese workers who are paid $50 a week.  The practice uses at least five to ten times the natural resources that it would have taken to produce it locally.  The planet is dying.  You either have to jump on board with the planet killing or starve and starve your brother, if you want to feed your family.  If you want to "make it' like the "hippies" in ashbury you have to sell out, sell your soul.  And yes, it is the price.

you speak as if the kids are mystified.  The truth is that the whole damned country is blind and that those that can see are awestruck at how   even in a place of legendary revolution there is not an ear to hear or a voice to speak.

Our children are not stupid, we are.

Oh ! I won't arque the plight and the state that this country seems to be in.  The old Hippies selling out ?  Well not the ones I talked to down in the Haight. It seems that a lot of those Old Hippies were selling products made localy by "home grown" craftmen, artist and etc. Of course there are exceptions to the rule.
I remember when Wal-Mart would not stock or sell any product if it was not made in the USA. Go check them out now.
I'm not going to get into a Butt kicking contest over this in our forum, but we being car -minded brings to mind why are our American auto companies in such a mess ?  If Mopar didn't connect with Daimler-Benz, they would not be in exstenance. If Ford didn't have a monster connection with Europe they wouldn't be here and now General Motors is in big time trouble even with connections . Why ?  Two good reasons are that you have to build something that the American buyer wants and secondly,( I will more than likely get into big trouble here) Unions. They were a good idea once apon a time. I'm not going there.

no contest wanted.

Unions are being rekond with.  Used as scapegoats. It used to be that you had to have the majority of the factory floor to HAVE a union.  Now what is needed is a GLOBAL co-operation. How could it be a bad thing when a CEO, or a shareholders profits soar to the stratosphere that a worker should see the same increase in salary?

my reps are unionized... so they get raises and make nearly as much as i do... it's less than a dollar difference... but they get overtime and holiday pay... and we have to be scared of the union cause they will use them for ANYTHING! you look at them wrong and they want the union involved... its just plain stupid. I would love to be at a job that has no union

What if you were a member?  I have never been in a union/  The people that work in my industry are too pussy to start one.  it won't matter soon, China will soon deploy it's car on our shores. soon after the oil WILL GO AWAY/  The bickering makes no difference.  I am proud that there is some company in this country that has been able to keep its workers wages commensurate  with the actual earnings of the company.  They will of course starve in the end for lack of fore-sight, how typical...

Amazing enough we have a rather large "outfit' in Smyrna Tn. that has never been Unionized after many efforts by the Union and a token amount of employs. Its called Nissan and I don't think its going away anytime soon.
VW tried to keep a plant in Westmorland Pa. producing the Rabbit in the early 80's but with the help of the United Auto Workers union ,the plant was on strike a lot of times and the quality of the car was really rotten,I mean rotten. VW said "the heck with this" jerked the whole assembly line up and went home.

Another example of non-unionized success in a major manufacturing company is McKee Foods.  I don't know what their ranking is right now, but when I worked there, (last, about 3 1/2 yrs. ago) they were the no. 1 snack cake manufacturer with their Little Debbie brand.
I remember rumors of unions coming in.  Some employees were happy and some were adamantly against it.  The rumors never came to fruition and were quickly nipped in the bud.  I felt that the raises, bonuses, and the pay scale at the time I was there was fair for the work done.  Of course the top echelon of the company makes more than the worker bees...

When the company treats the workers fair and square for the most part, You don't need a dang Union. The top Dogs should make more money within reason. The sad thing is a lot of companys are just plain greedy and always will be and they will stay with us unless they really screw up big time like Eron
