I hope you guys don't mind me dropping in. I'm in Nashville and am a member of MTVWC. We have a link to your website from ours and I just can't seem to get enough VW related websites into my favorites    so I've decided to join yours too! Besides, our website is totally boring    . I admit to spending a lot of time on theSamba (addiction) but I'd like to rap with VW nuts that are close to home too. Look forward to meeting everyone....later

Hey, Flat 4, come on in and have a seat.  I'm not a member of Scenic City myself, but, these are a great bunch of people.  I live too far away to be much involved.  I met some of these folks at Bug-a-Paluza 7.  had a great time there.  I'm a Samba addict too.  cant seem to get enough.  this is a very much more relaxed forum than Samba.  when I get on there it seems like after about 30 minutes my brain is full. sheww. and you wont find any smart a$$ answers in here.        Tell us about your VWs.

Welcome to our forum. As you can already tell, we are very relaxed here and if you have questions, don't be afraid to ask. We have a couple of individuals in our club and on our forums who are EXTREMLEY knowledgeable. A lot of us do our own work but we lean heavily on the Godfather (aka RetBugTech) and on Zen. We will be looking to hear more from you. :D

Welcome Flat, Sorry to hear that your forums are a little on the slow side. Why is that ? If you start hang'n out with us, you will find that we are anything but boring. As BBlankenship(Boone from W.VA) stated , no smart A$$s here, BUT a few "pokes" at each other has and does happen. All in fun. Nobody is safe here. I was in the VW business for over 40 years and I still get jumped on by folks that were not even born when I was in business.
Herb is correct about this VolksFolks bunch sitting on a lot of info from the history of VWs all the way up to the time they stuck a radiator out front. So jump in here and share a new found tip or another way to do something to keep our "Critters" on the road. You will get a response. You can bet on that. Air and water really does mix here.

Speaking of that, I can't believe you were in the bussiness over 40 years and didn't figure out the trick to removing bus ball joints!

I've still got to get the new joints pressed in, but I removed the old ones without the use of heat or a press.  Just used some basic hand tools, a gland nut, a generator pulley washer, a couple of old bolts and a cheap autozone 3 jaw puller.  Oh yeah, and a sidegrinder.  And a hacksaw.  And a 3 pound hammer and a couple of Ford V8 rod caps (not mine, long story).  And 3 days work.

OK, I see what you mean.  I should have just bought exchange trailing arms.  But, if I did I might get run out of the "triangle."

Welcome aboard flat4!  If you're bored, go to the tech questions forum and read the "Help with a slow starter" thread.  It'll explain the "triangle" thing.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody! I'm sure I've probably met some of you at Bug-a-paluza or circle yer wagens or maybe another show, if not I'm sure I will next season. Little bit of history real quick, I've been into VWs for 20 years, since I was 15, and like most teenage boys I wanted a Camaro but was given a VW, followed by a HotVWs and the rest is history. Boy, if my parents had it to do over I bet they'd give me that Camaro! I currently own 5 A/C Vdubs: 1)68 ghia hardtop with a Gene Berg 1904 stroker, rancho trans, 4 wheel disc w/fuch replicas etc. 2) 70 ghia convertible project 3) 72 ghia hardtop w/ self-built 1915, rancho trans, procar interior, polished rivieras (old school smooth spokes) 4) 69 squareback, engine assembly in progress and finally 63 beetle all OG except 12v conversion of which I happen to be the second owner! Whew! That being said, thanks again for having me and I understand it wouldn't feel like family without a few jabs here and there...I'm all in!

Zen, What do mean not knowing the trick to get bus ball joints out. After tearing up $150 worth of PROPER VW FACTORY TOOLS and watch a 20 ton press jump 3ft off the floor, We discovered 2 ways to do the job.
Number-1   Can we say TORCH and a VERY MEAN air chisel ?
Number-2   Customer comes in :  Hey can you guys replace my ball joints?  Getting up off the floor after a period of uncontrolable laughter and much tearing of the eyes, We stated: We are game if you are!! Customer leaves with a perplexed look in his eyes. He came back later. Dang It !!
Lets see Zen:  Assorted tools----------------------- $15
Misc. Special Tools(someones V-8 rods)  No charge yet
                         Misc. Scrap Tools---------------------No charge
               Labor- Beating and banging-----------------$150
Taking the Lords name in vain-------Priceless
                         3 days on the clock @ $1 per hr-----$48
               Misc medical supplys (band-aids etc)--------$2
               Joys input-------------------------------to be determined
               Therapy (5th of Catus Juice)-----------------$18
                                                            Total-------$233
If this is for all 4 ball joints you are calling it close
Now you get to install them

I haven't got the arms installed yet, but I got the old joints out AND the new ones installed in the arms without heat and without the aid of a press.  So, I did it . . . but I won't ever do it again.  I started the job with a 3 pound hammer . . . it weighed at least 50 pounds the last time I swung it!  :tard:
