How to Open front trunk when cable is stretched?

« on: November 08, 2010, 07:39:55 PM »
Hello
Dave here your wayward friend in East Nashville who recently bought a 74 standard Beetle.  I am trying to install a replacement speaker in the dash and went out to find that the release lever in glove box no longer has enough tension to open the darn thing.  So how in the heck can I open it, the car has A/C so there is all that under the front and I can't get a grasp on how to either access the latch or get my hands on the cable.  Thanks y'all and hope to take the gorgeous drive to your beautiful city very soon.  Yours in Volkswagan,

Dave

I know one way is to cut the handle into three pieces and unscrew it,  but there may be a way to move the glove box

If the handle is loose in the glovebox, I had one where i would just grab the whole darned thing, and pull, and it would let go.  Other that that, yeah, cut the handle, or if you are blessed with a rusty spare tire well, (and the spare is not in it), just go up from below, and slide the cable/release arm sideways.

Or try this.  Have some one hold the latch handle down in the glove box while you JERK the hood handle back and forth side ways and see if it will pop open. I have done a lot like this.

Bugapaluza, every year in April... one of the biggest shows in the southeast, and best, just my opinion...

Cruise-ins, every month, monthly meetings, Oktoberfest celebrations, parades, etc etc etc.... Lots of stuff going on.  Just watch the "Upcoming Events section on the forum.
