How do you start a car?

« on: February 15, 2011, 05:58:44 PM »
My Brother  was here and apparently I don't  start cars correctly.

What I do is let go of the starter  as soon as I hear the engine catching .  Sometimes the engine  does not keep running so I do it again.

He was of the opinion  that  you just keep on cranking the startrt  till  the engine starts well.

Whats the verdict?  Whats better for the engine?, whats better for the starter?  SC

I pop the clutch about halfway down the hill and hope it's running before it gets to the bottom.  What's a starter?

stupie starter tips

1.  smell for gas,  if no gas smell is detected. Steal some from Lumina
2.  turn 8 buck ignition switch
3.  Reach under dash for secret  Maytag starter button, be careful to avoid metal burrs.
4.  start engine
5.  If oil light stays on.   turn off ignition
6.  Add some oil to engine
7.  goto step 1

The guy said this starter works down to about 10 below.  He's working on a kick start . . . he thinks that would be good to at least 40 below. ;D

I like the duct tape engine seal!

I should get one of those for bonnie cause once every 10 or 12 start attempts, its a no go... Have to jump the terminals on the starter to get it to start spinning again.

You ought to see that bus in person.  It has a woodburing stove, a hole in the floor for ice fishing, home-made rain gutters that are about a foot wide . . . and the seats . . . it's got THE COOLEST seats you will ever see in an old bus . . .   ;D

Zen.. I like the bus

I guess this was another one of my BS questions.   I think I'm a bit biased since I've taught 4-7 kids how the drive.  Just one student did not pass.  With kids, they lay on that starter 2-3 seconds after the engine is running .  I get to hear the squeal of the endangered starter gear.  That's why I say as soon as the engine starts to take.  Take you cotton picking hands off the key.  SC
