Get it insured.  Take your Bill of Sale and proof of insurance to your county tag office.  As long as the Bill of Sale states that it's more than 13 years old, that will be all you need.  If the Bill of Sale was dated over 30 days ago, you'll have to pay a late filing fee (I think it's either $10 or $20) and you'll have to pay a $20 tag fee.  If you owned it Jan. 1st of this year, you'll also have pay the ad valorum tax on the value of the vehicle (it's only a couple of dollars on my old VWs).  As long as your Insurance Company knows exactly what they are insuring, you should be OK.

 :)

Thanks,  it won't be a problem even with just a Ct id# as a vin#.

Is the CT ID # fastened to it in any way (stamped in the frame or a tag rivited to it)?  What year does the bill of sale list it as?

If it's 1990 (maybe '89 or '88 . . . but I'm pretty sure it's 1990) or older, all you need is insurance and a bill of sale.  The will run the VIN through the states computer and as long as it's not stolen, they should give you a tag.

The big thing is insurance.  Make sure your insurance company knows what they are insuring and that the bill of sale ID # is permantly attached to it in some way.  If it isn't, get it stamped in before you start trying to do anything.  Any machine shop should have a set of stamps and would probably do it for just a few $$$.

I tagged an old single wheel trailer a few years back. I didn't have bill of sale and it had no ID # . . . the lady at the tag office said I could just tag it as homebuilt and gave me a GA ID plate to fasten to the frame.  People build rail buggies all the time and get them tagged in GA . . . I'm not sure what's involved there, but it's probably something like what I did with my trailer.  At any rate, it shouldn't be a big deal getting a tag once you have insurance.

Thanks again for the help, the tag is a metal tag that is permanent to the frame if you were to take it off it would be ruined.  so i should get insurance with the ct id # and go to the tag office.  if they dont accept the ct id # they should give me a new georgia #.  i'll see if that works.  thanks.

I don't think you'll have any problems.  Again, the big thing is insurance.  In the past year, GA has become anal about insurance.  If you have a laps of coverage for more than 24 hours, your WILL pay the state a $25 fine . . . if not paid on time at the local tag office, the tag is suspended and you will pay a $60 fee to have it re-instated.

For the second offense within 5 years, you have the $25 fine and an automatic 30 day suspension of the tag.  Again, you have to pay the $60 re-instatement fee.

For the third offense within 5 years, the tag is automatically suspended for 6 months and the re-instatment fee is $160.

If you go to your local insurance agent and make a payment on the day your insurance is going to laps, get a reciept and have insurance coverage in force . . . but your local agent has a computer problem and doesn't get your payment info to the main office until more than 24 hours after the laps time, the main office has to report to the state that you had a laps in coverage . . . the fees above WILL apply, even though you did actually have coverage!   :O

This whole tag thing is enough to make me want to move the short two miles over to Alabama's side of the mountain!

this is funny.  i went and got insurance today no problem.took the insurance to the tag office and they told me i needed to get a vin number check.  so the police come to my house to do a vin check, they run the vin and the car comes back stolen.  i bought the car 4 years ago and pulled it out of some guys back yard in terrible shape. got a bill of sale and all his info, his old registration and insurance cards.  well to make a long story short and 3 cops at my house with a detective and auto theft unit, ct ended up reissuing the vin to a home made trailer because the car had not been registered in 20 years, and as my luck would have it that trailer was stolen in ct.  Ct did end up looking up my vehicle which was last registered in 1983 to the person whom i bought it from, they did appologize (surprisingly) for the mistake. the detective told me i was clear to go get georgia numbers on the car but was not sure how to do it.  my fun mourning.

it was pretty scary, i thought my car that i spent $1000's was gone and i was going to get arrested for auto theft.  on the good side the cop was a hot chick and called me later to tell me everything was clear and to just go to the tag office to get new number assighned for georgia
