Brian , You say 1500cc. Is this a big bore 40hp or an orginal 1500cc? If it is a orginal 1500cc 53hp , you can use a lot of "stuff" 0ff your engine to put on your new 1600cc. If you don't know for sure, send me the block ser# and I can tell you.

Hell Fire Bugz !!  A little J-B Weld and a clamp or two, You are on your way.
By the looks of the side of the  piston, I belive that engine had been run red hot, burning a piston before the rod bearing gave up. I cannot belive you didn't hear all the "clattering" from the rod bearing long before it slung it out the case .  I think you already had a later model engine case. Clean off the top of a piston and tell me if it says  85.45mm and I would guess your case is a " B" or AE something. How close I'm I ?  Just checking my eyeballs
Did you run out of oil ?  run without a fanbelt ?  . Be honest so you don't have to go looking for another cause.

Brian, Is this the same block that you broke the cooler stud on? If so I would like to see the cooler and the seals.

 OOPS!!! You did'nt by any chance have that engine built by a guy in Oregon did you?? I'm kidding. An old throwback to a point in my life when I wound up with an engine that would most likely have resulted in the same situation if we had put it in the car.

Here is the info:  The case is H5358457 and the piston was 87.93.  I was just cruising about 65mph along Hwy 27 at about 3:00pm on a sunny hot saturday afternoon when it rattled about 30 sec. and then ceased.  There was pleanty of oil and the fanbelt was still good and tight.  But the oil cooler seals where a little melted looking.

Step away from the H5 cases(they suck)! I'm currently waiting for mine to do the same.

Brian, Not that it makes any differents now ,the " H " cases were used on the type-1  in '67 (10mm nuts on oil pump) and  '68-'69.  The 87. 93mm jugs are after-market big bore. These were commonly called "88mm" It seemed that these "88"s ran hotter because of the very thin cly.  Your engine used to be a 1641 cc. with the "88s"
Like I said before, the #4 piston showed signs of burning up before the rod let go. I bet #3 looked worse or should have. I would guess all the metal particals burning off the pistons ended up in the oil burning the rod bearings up.  #4 rod always seems to be the first to go.
Melted oil cooler seals tells me that your engine was running way,way to hot for a while. If these seals melt down they can block the oil going through the cooler completly. So what happened ?  Why was the engine running red hot?  Wrong seals?  Bad seals ? Timing wrong?   Engine compartment seals gone ?   Heater pipes off fan housing ?   Low oil pressure ?
Scott, Why do you not like "H" cases ?  Thats what your '67 came with.
They seemed to run real good when built right ,but not my first choice for a modified today. My fake WW-2 Bug will be running a "H" case. I don't have a problem with that and besides I already had the case.

Alot of shops refuse to touch em(h cases) I think they would be ok for a factory motor but They definetly aren't good forr anthing hotrodded. mine has the dreaded 88's and has been good so far, recently I have been watching my oil pressure steadily drop on trips to Clevland. Im thinkin it's gettin hot and the oil is given up on me.After seein this I'm gettin scared.I definetly wont be pushin anymore speed records till I get this thing under control. I need to do a oil change anyways and it's been at least 3 months since I pulled the engine  . I'm gonna have to sit down and get you to show me 1 time how to do a proper valve adjutment cause I must be doin it the dumb way. I'll recheck the timing and carbs.I'm also loking at getting a tach and a temp sensor to verify if it's gettin hot..If I can't iron it out then it might be motor buildin time. :?

If the "H" cases were so bad, How come EMPI, SCAT, BERG and all them guys built such mean ass engines ?   That was the best case at the time. Of course things are bigger and better now and you have more choices of goodies.  Its like saying a "Flat Head" Ford V8 wasn't worth a crap in the 40's and 50's compared to the "small Block' Chevy of today. If you wanted to come out and play in the 40's and 50's you built a "Flat Head" Ford. Signs of the times I guess
