Yep !! Its been pretty quite. I quess its been to hot for anyone to go out and break anything or everybody got a lot of projects going on.
I, myselve have had a concrete pad poured in the the back yard and preparing to build a shop. You saw my back yard one day when you and Herb came over to do something to your car. Now maybe now I can do something with my projects without lying around in the gravel and mud.

Yeah! As much as the dank, dark confines of your basement were intriguing I'm sure you'll be relieved to get the shop built. And maybe that kdf car?

Yes indeed! The slab is down and at least I can get back to the projects when the thing is cured enough to drive on. The shop is going to be close behind as soon as I can figure out the layout that will work for me.

Herb , Our post must have passed each other.
The total size of the pad is 32.8'  x  35.7'  .   Terry has to make up 28" with pavers  to join the slab to the original garage floor and join the slab to the asphalt drive due to not being able to bury the propane line under a slab.
Terry did a wonderful job on the slab. I cannot belive how good it looks. I just stand out there looking at it.
Got to go wet the thing down as per instrutions.

As far as bracking anything,  My 64 Beetle started rattling for about 30 sec. and then died.   I coasted to the side of the road to discover smoke coming out of the vents.  When I opened the lid I had a fire around the passenger side intake manifold and I didn't have anything to put it out with.  Talk about time slowing down!  Luckly someone stopped with a large coke from Taco Bell and we were able to put out the fire.  As for the engine it is locked up now.  I haven't done anything but push him back into my garage.   :(

Oooops !!  Do you see any extra metal parts laying around in the engine comp. thats not suppose to be there . Find any holes anywhere ?
Drop the oil strainer out and see whats on the plate.
You could have dropped a ex.valve or worst had a rod to deside to it wanted out. Interesting that you had a fire unless whatever flew out of the case (if it did) knock a fuel line off or hit a electrical wire and shorted something out. Hmmmmm. Keep us posted. What ever happened , it doesn't  good. :(

after it happened I did notice a dime size chunk of metal laying near the dip stick on the tin.  Also it looks like the spark plug wire had jumped off of the #2 spark plug and was melted to the cylinder tin.

Brian , What was the metal ? Aluminum, steel ? Is #2 spark plug still where it belongs ?
You could take the rocker arms, off the #1-2 side and see if any of the valve stems/spring  stick out further than the other indicating you may have dropped a valve, usally a exhaust valve

After further investigation I noticed a larger chunk of metal laying on top of the case behind the manifold and a rather large hole exposing the internal organs of my little beetle.     Here is a couple of pics.  One is of the chunk of case and the other is the scorched passenger side of the engine.  Maybe he want be out of commission to long.  :?

A really Big OOOPS.   Is this the original 1200 cc ? Are you going to try to  replace the engine with another 40hp or update a little ?  When Richard and I were restoring a '63 ,I had a heck of a time finding pistons /cly for a 40hp. I could find 36hp and 25 hp stuff easyer than I could find 40 hp.I don't know why. I think I would lean toward using a 1600cc single port engine that you can get parts for without getting a Federal Grant unless you are just hell bent to stay original. I have a '64 case that belongs to Richard that I can alignbore and would work just fine. It has the right numbers.
Why don't you take your engine apart to see what you can save.

It had already been upgraded to a 1500 before I bought it.  I think I'll go with a 1600 s/p.
