Harry Guinn and engine rebuild

« on: May 18, 2005, 07:27:23 PM »
I have been in contact with a lady whose son has a '72 bus that was given to him.  I have been over to look at it, and the engine is locked up, either the rear brakes are locked or transmission is locked (won't roll with brake off and out of gear), and might have some electrical woes.  Body is not that bad...some rust, of course.  She wanted to know about how much $$ it would take to get it on the road.  I told her that the pancake engines cost a little more than the old upright ones.  I told her to talk to Lockhart's.
Today she calls and says that Jim says that he won't or can't touch this one and referred her to Harry Guinn.  Harry has an engine block for it for $250, or he will rebuild it himself for $1000.  I don't know how much for the rest of the bus' problems.
First of all, this seems like a decent price for a T4 engine rebuild.  Secondly, she was wanting to know if he is a good engine rebuilder.  I told her that I personally haven't had any business with him except for buying parts, but that I heard he is good.  Anyone have any experience with Harry and his work?
Also, she wants to know that if she puts that much money into it and then decides to sell it, can she get her $1000 back?  I told her that if it is in good running condition, and not a rustbucket, recouping that amount would be no problem.  This bus is sitting in a driveway off a road (I want to say "Tucker Road").  One ways goes to E. Brainerd and the other way goes to Igou Gap Rd., up past the "cheap" theater near Hamilton Place Mall, and runs parallel to I-75. Anyone seen it?  It is white.  Stop by and check it out.
She wants my opinion tomorrow morning (that's why I ask for your opinions today) because she wants to get the bus out of the PO's driveway by Monday. :thumbs-up:

Shoot, for $1000, I'm tempted to try to fix it myself. :-k

Travis , I have known Harry about 40 years. He can do the job if he wants to. You might have to wait about 3 months to get it back if you are lucky.  $1000 sound a little to cheap for a shop retailing to the public when type 1 engines are retailing around $1100-1300. Type 4 for a $1000 ?  I think I would get a written warranty on parts and labor. I think I would ask for at least 12 mo. or 12,000 miles and a list of all new parts.
Travis , a word to the wise. Don`t get caught in the middle of this deal.I have said enough.

Thanks.  I copied and pasted your reply in my email to her to try and give her a better idea of what to do.
Anyone here want to take on a Type IV rebuild?  It's a '72...I think that would be a 1700?
I'm sure it's a long shot, but if anyone is interested, let me know and I will get you her number.

Travis, you might also want to recommend Bobby Hixson on Fairview Rd in Hixson. I have one of his engines, a friend of mine has one and Richard S. has bought one from him. He's been around a bunch of years. His number is in the book. I don't have it right off hand.
