I listened to everyone check in on the local net tonight, I was able to hear Nick and Matthew!

Thanks. That's a great fix. This version of Ubuntu is so much more user friendly than the distros I've used in the past. The Ubuntu Software Center is much more intuitive than the old Software Updater. I was playing around in there last night and I found a good practice test app called hamexam. I've got to get started on those General Class practice tests!

I really like the newer versions of Ubuntu, especially on netbooks. Mine has a pretty puny 1.6 atom processor but Ubuntu is still easy enough on resources to keep it useable.

Yup. That was all the excitement! Matthew said he was going to test for general at the next meeting with you. I guess that means I need to start practicing the test too... Oh boy...

Got my new antenna in today, it fits perfectly and all the reviews say it improves performance over the stock antenna. Plus it's flexible, which also seems good.

Also noticed on Amazon you can get a little rubberized case for the radio, might make it a little more resistant to the elements.

Looks good! Have you noticed much clarity or increased reception? I couldn't exactly tell with either the 14" one I got or the 5' J-pole I have hanging in the window.

As for the rubber cover keeping out the elements, I dropped my little radio in a cup of water by accident. Matthew got in the car and placed his glass of water in a cup holder where I normally keep my radio. I dropped the radio in the cup holder, on it splashed down before it made it to the cup holder. I freaked and then remembered that it was only $35 for a radio that would talk for about ~100 miles. I dried it out in a bowl of rice in the fridge and it still works! I am really not worried about the elements now!

Haven't noticed much difference yet with it sitting at home. Probably need to do some real-world tests with it.

You will have lots of questions... it is somewhat confusing at first, but once you start figuring it out, it is pretty simple. Definitely download CHIRP.

Russ plans on taking his HAM technician test soon, are you going to join him?

My plan was to go to the meeting on August 6th and take the test, but later I realized I'll be at the beach that week so I can't go. So maybe the September meeting? I've been doing tons of practice tests, both on my phone and online and I've been passing them all. The book I got last night at McKay's is out of date with the pool of test questions, but the study material is still good.
