Guess Who I Met Today?

« on: December 31, 2011, 02:16:10 AM »
I ran into a fellow VW enthusiast earlier today.  Well, now that I think about it, it was actually yesterday . . . but either way, he's a super cool guy and owns several vintage VWs.   ;D 8)

Mike Wolfe has a facebook page.  If you "like" it, you will see his posts . . . I saw one he made Thursday that said he would be in the Nashville shop yesterday from 1-4.  There was a wreck on the interestate in downtown Nashville, so we sat in traffic for over an hour and it was close to 3 when we got there.  There was a line half a block down the sidewalk just to get in the door.  We got inside the shop about 3:30 . . . it was about 4:30 when I finally got to the front of the line.  As soon as my "turn" came up and I mentiioned that I loved his single cab, he went into overdrive . . . this guy is, I believe, the most enthusiastic VW enthusiast I've ever met.  The line wasn't any shorter than when I got there, so we had to limit the conversation . . . but within a minute or so he told me about several VW's he owns, talked about the VW powered Harley sitting in his shop and how he used to buy and sell Ghia's.  He also asked when Bug-A-Paluza is held . . . a couple of his VWs are Nashville based . . .  ;D

In that last picture, the wall in the background is a section of metal from "Gilley's" (Mickey Gilliey's nightclub that was featured in the movie Urban Cowboy) with the original painted sign pointing to the entrance.  The thing with all the signatures on it is the big fiberglass boot they bought on one of their early episodes of American Pickers.

The coolest thing in the shop is the WWII era Harley with a 36 HP VW engine.  It's Not For Sale.

Frame looks much later than a '42 H-D.   Still pretty cute.  You did invite them to B-P ??

I didn't get a chance to invite him . . . when I got to the front of the line, before I had a chance to say anything, he was asking me about my shirt (BP-13) and as soon as I got out "VW show" and "Chattanooga" he was wanting to know when it is.  He has two of his vintage VWs in Nashville . . . as soon as he started talking about VW's, he went into overdrive.  I don't even remember what the two VWs were but I think one was either an oval or split window Beetle . . . maybe one of each.

I think he would have talked VWs for hours with me, but it was already a half hour past when he had planned on leaving and there were at least 100 folks still in line to get their hand signed American Pickers photo and having their picture made with him . . . so I handed him a bag with BP-13 shirts and a couple of Volks Folks cards and asked him to check our web site.  We'll see where it goes.

You're kidding!!! We were there that same morning and didn't know anything about him being there that afternoon!

I agree that the coolest stuff was NFS! The vintage drums, the VW toolkit, some of the industrial-type pieces, the VW/Harley. Plenty of T-shirts and mousepads, though!

It did seem unusually crowded, though!
