Going to be in the area next month

« on: April 22, 2005, 01:07:41 AM »
This is a little bit, (3 weeks away) but I am going to be coming up to Chattanooga on May 13-15. A few of my friends and myself are going to spend the weekend there. Check out all the tourist stuff. We're tired of ging to the beach and one of my friend said she'd never been to Chattanooga (the girl has been to Europe, but never Chattanooga) We are going to be driving up in my '67 Bus and probably that alone. It would be nice to know that if something happens, I could have a little help from some fellow VW people.(wink, wink) :)
It's not that long of a trip from where I live (just below Birmingham) but it might be the Bus's first roadtrip. I'd just like to be prepared.

BTW, I've been to Bugapaluza, although I didn't get to come this year. I've been there in my yellow 71 Beetle. It's a great show.

Come on up!  If you run into trouble, help won't be far away.

Thanks, I'm really looking forward to the trip.
Some people look at me funny when I tell them I'm going to Chattanooga in it. Yesterday someone said "Aren't you afraid it's going to break down?" LOL, Well it could, anything could happen. I've driven my Beetle much farther than Chattanooga though. It has four wheels and an engine, it's meant to be driven in my opinion.
Plus, how can you have  VW Bus and not go on roadtrips in it? It's like some unwritten law that you have to.
Look for this cruising around chattanooga may 13-15

Guts nothin...man you got style. I have a 66 splitty, Gandalf, hes all original but looks worse for wear than yours. I drove him all the way to Sarasota Fla. and back in November for the Unique Slam and Bullie Brigade. I did run into trouble, but it was driver error not van error...... beware the oil rags....

If it's in halfway sound mechanical shape, I wouldn't be afraid to drive a bus accross the country.  I've been to Tampa in my type 1 powered '73 bus 3 times without any trouble.  In June, I'm driving it to Effingham, IL to the Mid-America Motorworks FunFest . . . then probably down to Branson before heading home.

The one year I went to FL Bug Jam and didn't drive my bus, I bummed a ride in Herb's 67 21 window ragtop Deluxe.  Other than being a little cold the first 200 or 300 miles, it was a GREAT trip!   8)

It's not guts . . . it's having faith in your vehicle, your ability to fix it if it does break down, and knowing that you have friends to bail you out if all else fails.    :D

I don`t know why anyone with a T-2 should worry about a long trip if its in good shape. I think the Driver will "conk Out" before the van will. You just have to remember that you don`t have a 5 spd. and a VR-6. I have "hunkered" over those Greyhound steering wheels for many a mile and had to have help falling out of it when I got where I was going. I just about had a right arm that looked like Popeye The Sailor Man`s  when I did all that Stick Stiring in the mountains, but we had a lot of fun. Can you imagine doing this in a 25hp Barndoor Van ? Whew !!!!!!
