Contact your local state representitives . . .

This is an easy one.  With what happened in FL in the 2000 presidental election, politicians have learned that if you want to keep your job, make as many people as possible happy.  They may "seem" insignificant, but come election day, keeping your job may come down to whether or not those 4 or 5 hundred car nuts in your district like you.  If they see even a few hundred registered voters names on a piece of paper or get a few phone calls, letters, and emails (all of them together work best), your reps. will support such a bill.  It'll make a small number of voters happy and the rest could care less.  What have they got to loose by supporting it?  The hardest part is getting a representitive to introduce the bill.  Once it's been introduced, I'd bet it will pass . . . especially if you call, write, and email your representive.

Someday I'll get my 63 Bug on the road . . . and it'll be sporting a 63 GA tag I picked up a while back at a yard sale for $3!   :D

Most old TN tags after the cool state-shaped tags are pretty plain, anyway.  Actually the current Antique Tags look a lot like 60s-70s TN tags and I know a bunch of us will be running those pretty soon, right?

I run GA antique vehicle tags on all my VWs but they really don't seem to fit (see picture below).  I've thought about getting a VW logo sticker and put over the antique roadster.  99% of law enforcement officers in GA are more of the "Andy" type and wouldn't think twice about it, but every now and then Barney shows up . . . Guess I better just live with the tag as-is.

The year of manufacture plate law if (when) it passes will still not affect the VWs I'm driving.  1970 will be the cutoff.  The reason is that starting in '71 GA stopped issuing a new plate every year.  They figured out that they could save a LOT of money by just giving you a new sticker to put in the corner of you existing plate.

Now if I planned to drive Homer ONLY in the mountains, GA does have the perfect VW Bus tag . . . (see second attached picture)

:D Hi Zen and all you fine folks at Volksfolks. Sorry Ive been away so long. Ive been busier than a 3 legged cat covering up poop!!!

Zen I would suggest someone type up a petition to be presented to one of the elected officals asking them to sponsor legislation to allow drivers in the State of Tennessee to display "Historical License Plates" in a law like the one Georgia has almost passed into law. I would be glad to type one up and email it to someone or snail mail it. I would have copies made and have them out at the show for the residents of Tennessee to sign off on. Then the club could present it to the official. Be sure and tell them of all the good your club does, the money your show brings to the area, etc and any good info you can relay to them. But as you stated, the thing that will get their attention the fastest is the SIGNATURES.

The next thing will be personal contacts by phone, email etc. I will research Tennessee law and see when multi year tags started and if you and your folks would like I will also prepare a letter with an outline of a proposed law. Im not trying to butt in here. I am only offering to help if it is wanted.

I hope to be at the show this year to enjoy the food and see the cars and you folks again.

Hey Copperjewel,

I would greatly appreciate it if you would compose a proposal for us to set out at the show and get signitures on. I, personally, have a lot on my plate now, getting ready for our show, and don't really have the time to set down and write a good proposal. If you will, just email it to me. We'll be looking forward to seeing you at the show.

:D No problem Herb. I just finished the petition. I did some research and found out that Tennessee last issued a single year plate in 1961. I really like the ones from the 50-56. They are in the shape of Tennessee like Anthony said. 1962 was the last year that had the year imprinted on the tag. Even if the law is passed and you dont like the look of the tag for your year, you dont have to take advantage of the law.

After the show is over I would like to come to one of the meetings and bring the pictures of the old tags. You can tell me what years you would like to see included in the law. I can then compose a letter that you can present to your elected officials. If you can get with the other VW clubs in Tennessee and get them to support this issue, then it could be a multi club approach. The letter could list all the clubs on the header. Just a thought. The phrase that there is power in numbers holds true in politics. Hope to see you at the show if I am able to get off work.

:D For any interested, the bill passed the House and now awaits the Governors signature. I'm checking on the effective date. The bills usually state effective July 1 of the current year passed or upon the signature of the Governor. This one makes no mention of effective date :?:

:D Just wanted to say we had a wonderful time last night with you fine folks. I am looking forward to working on getting legislation passed in Tennessee to allow the "historical license plate" to be displayed.

One question that came up last night was that at first reading of the Georgia law that it gives the impression it had to be the "actual tag issued for that car" in the year 1970 and back.  As was stated last night, this is not the case.

Section (a) says that the term "historical Georgia license plate" means a license plate orignally issued in the year 1970 or earlier AND required to be displayed on motor vehicles operated upon the streets and highways of this state in the year 1970 or earlier pursuant to FORMER motor vehicle registration laws of this state.

Section (b) has one part that sets forth the requirement that the "authentic historical Georgia license plate" has to represent the model year of any such antique motor vehicle.

I personally would have liked to have seen it allowed to display lets say a 68 tag on a 66 vehicle if the owner wanted to. Not everyone may be able to find the actual year tag for their car, but could find one for the year later etc. But I'm not pushing it!! I'm just glad it is here!!!

So again, my thanks to all of you for the great time last night.

:D  \:D/  =D>

For those who are tracking this,Governor Perdue signed SB117 into law on May 2, 2005. I thank Marty, Charles and all the local folks who were working on this before I got into the VW scene. I thank all of you who contacted your representative this session to assure the passage of this law.

I am checking now to see what form(s) we have to file to get the tags on our cars. I know the law requires the state system to be operational by Jan 1, 2006 to track the tags. As soon as I get a definite answer I will pass it on.
