Geocache

« on: September 28, 2012, 02:12:28 AM »
Does anyone search for Geocaches?

I started looking into them earlier this week and found a few while I was killing time this week, but then this evening, Megan and I drove around East Brainerd searching for them. We found 9, I think. We couldn't find 1 and didn't want to go into the woods at one location.

The concept is that someone hides a container of any size and posts the coordinates on geocaching.com. Then people can input the coordinates and search withing a couple meters of the hiding spot. Once you find them, you open the container and sign a log of who all has found it. Sometimes the larger ones have a trade thing where you can take an item if you leave an item.

It's pretty fun and can be very challenging. Most of the ones we found today were film canisters. I remember accidentally finding one in college on a monument on campus. It was so small it was in the weep hole of the bricks, so about the size of a pencil, but only the eraser was showing!

Been a member of Geocashing.com for like 8 years now...
Don't go out as much as I used to, but it is fun.
The kids are getting old enough now to take them out as well.
Have a Garman E-trex so as to go off road for awhile.

I've been a few times. Great way to kill an afternoon with some friends.

We tracked down several downtown and a few on Gunbarrel. Some are really cleverly hidden.

I've heard of it, but never done it.  Sounds like it might be fun.  I may have to try it someday. 8)

Yep.  Pretty fun stuff.  When the kids were kids,  I,d take them out.  Each kid got to hold the gps for 5 minutes.  It's pretty funny watching them go round in circles.  Lafayette has a few caches.  The fun ones are out in the woods.    When you find one you can get on line and give an up date that the location is still good.   Some caches are ammo boxes with toys and things.  You are asked to take a toy and leave one.   Like McDonald's stuff
