This is a anybody question. Is there any reason to go from generator to altinator other than if you had several electrical things you ran while engine running?

Generator to Altinator

Well, it keeps the parts guys in business.

The "Big" advantage is an alternator puts out a little more amps and the brushes last longer.  Another "Big" advantage is the new alternators have solid state regulators that are pretty reliable.  But, Bosch now makes a solid state regulator for generators.  I put one on Homer about a year and half ago and ALL of my eletrical problems went away.

The biggest advantage of a generator, in my humble opinion, is that you can wire the generator up to run as a motor.  If you break a belt, as long as you have a good charge on the battery you can keep the engine from melting down for a few miles.  This can be a big deal if you're back in the woods in a Baja or on side of the interstate 5 miles from the nearest exit with no cell phone service.

Oh ok.Well for now if it's not broke don't fix it but go with one when it's pooped.Or is it replace the brushes when it goes poop?Compared to the price of a new one.Unfortunately Zen my money tree died for now.Maybe down the road it will grow back some. We have had a lot of sickness in the family including myself.Glad we have insurance but I tell you what. One prescription is 1250 dollars a month for me alone.Like I said we are lucky to have insurance lol. When things get a little better then maybe I can tinker and order a few more part's I don't need. I use to be a preventive maintainence type of guy.If it even looked like it might break or go bad then I replaced it.I think it's a mental thing.Maybe I need professional help lol. I can't say this enough as I think about it.Zen everyone on this forum I have talked to are just great people.Everyone.Everyone is so nice.I know sometimes I over reply and maybe post too much.I have used and been on the computer more than I ever have for entertainment due to having to confine myself closer to home than I ever have due to illness which I will continue to work on and overcome. I enjoy reading all of ya'lls posts and pick things up from them. It's alot of fun for me.Who would have thought I would get back into vw's in someway.Glad I did.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the stand have to be replaced also if you go from generator to alternator?

Herb, You have to change the stand also. We have talked about Gen-v-Alt before.  As long as I can get gen. this what I will use. It seems that over the years I have replaced more cooling fans with their centers broken out due to the lightness of the alt. not absorbing any out of balance in the fan or engine viabration. It doesn't take much to do the damage. Remember that the fan is turning about 1 1/2 times more RPMs than the crankshaft. That heavy Gen. seems to absorb most of that Hi-Frequency viabrations.
Like Zen said, If you are not pulling 800 W radios , 10  100W driving lights, who needs a alt ?  That old Gen works just fine and now with the new solid state regulator ,Its even better.
This is my story and I'm sticking with it. So there "Phatttttttt !
