gas smell inside classic vw

« on: January 10, 2012, 06:25:58 PM »
Anyone that has had experience and found a solution to the gas smell inside a VW I am looking at?  Owner suggests nothing can be done just don't fill the tank up..Checked with my brother in another state and he suggests that the vent tube might have a leak or in other ways be defective..

What kind of VW? Gas smell could be coming from a number of things. Vent lines could have rubber hoses that are dry rotted. Charcoal canister could be missing. Fuel filler neck could be cracked. Best to go through the whole fuel system.

Like Russ said, there can be a lot of different causes.  Some models are more prone to gas smells in the cab than others.  Is it a Super Beetle?  If so, I've had a LOT of experinace trying to fix the problem . . . after changing out about everything attached to the tank, I figured out the problem WAS the tank.  With a full tank, gas would seep through the seam at the back of the tank.
