gas leak

« on: January 23, 2011, 06:50:39 PM »
So I'm working on the 91 Saab and need a vac hose.  I fire up trusty Stupie.   Stupie is acting cranky.  Finally starts.. We take off.  running rough . then conk out,  no gas.  I check the engine and then restart.  Away we go. I'm thinking "whats up"  I putter 3 miles to a gas pump.   Throw 10 bucks in the tank and get to  the Parts store. . I buy a 2 foot of hose  for 7 bucks. As I leave and   walk to Stupie.. I see  there is a shiny puddle under neath.   Oh no!!!!. I slide under the bug . OMG!!!!..  the gas is leaking on the wires that power the fuel pump.  The electrical tape on the wires has fell off.  We got gas soaked+/- 12 volt wires millimeters apart. I'm glad I went to Church this morning.  I move the wires apart.   the leak is a ratty fuel line hose.   I make it home with a fire extinguisher between my legs. . Fixed the hose .   I need a fuel delivery  redesign  .  SC

Gee wiz.  this is no fun with a half full tank.  Move the pump and most of the working to inside the cabin.  Now if I leak I should smell it/

"...I see dead people..."

This isn't going to end well.
Do you even have a fire extinguisher?
LOL - Good luck.

Is this a bad idea?.  Seems like the hoses will have a better life inside the car.  protected from a wreck..?

one word: Firewall...

I don't think its dangerous to route a fuel line through the cabin (well its more so than not doing it) but I think the concern comes from the fact it all looks kinda thrown together. The hose coming through the metal without a grommet, the pump doesn't look like it is mounted, the wires are kinda dangling. secure the loose ends and it won't be as dangerous. You might get gas on your friends legs!?!?!

Thanks Nick

Only my dogs will roll with me and Stupie.  Since I love my dogs I should fix this. I have a fire extinguisher . I need a bigger one...I think

Huh?  you noticed the thrown together ?   Getting the gas line thru the tunnel was too hard,  so I ran It along the out side, You should see the part were the line goes over the cv axle in the back.  thats another crap job I did.    I'll take a pic.

I do want to tie the pump in good and put a kick box around it. I have the pump resting in a bed of walmart bags to quiet it down. the main goal was replace rotten hose and stop the gas from killing the grass.   Success  SC

Strangely I feel that this is germane to the current situation...

Maybe you need to go back to the motorcycle tank strapped to the roof.  That would take the electric pump out of the picture, get the gas line out of the interior and if you had a wreck, maybe the tank would be thrown clear. ;D

I think i remeber a story about bushey having a home light switch to operate the brake lights on his beetle

I was a first hand witness....

I believe my question to him was "Eric, what the hell do you have a light switch hanging from the radio for, and where do those wires go to?"

The rest you can imagine....
