The boat is hinged at the stern and flips 180 deg. If you look, you can see the outboard mounted below the boat at the rear of the Bug. I had a friend in high school who's dad had this on a Rambler American. A real B**** to unload.

I thought that he was using the Outboard for a little more umph to get that beetle moving...

Heck, he doesn't even need the boat, he could have done this:

I love this add...

That ad was a spoof that ran in National Lampoon magazine shortly after the actual accident. It was based on the Doyle-Dane-Bernbach ads that were hugely popular at the time.
I went through a VW ad phase a few years ago. I wanted to collect one of each from the original magazines and got pretty darn close. I also found three books written about the ad campaign. Still got most of it. Ask me anything!

Big Ted's "accident" was in 1969.
That Beetle has to be a 1972 based off what I see:
Reflectors on side of rear lights, 4 vent section engine bonnet, Large rear windscreen.  Was he trying for the 1972 Prez. election?
Any way, just trying to ID the year of the ad.

Before the "accident" and after his brothers were taken out of the picture Teddy seemed be headed for, at minimum, a serious attempt at becoming president.  Any chance he might have had at being elected died with Mary Jo.  Seems like he did make a half-hearted attempt at the White House in '76 or '80 but dropped out of the race early when it was obvious that he didn't have a chance.

I found this about the ad on the internet :
Quote
That [ad] was in the National Lampoon Encyclopedia of Humor (1973). It's listed in the contents page (under D) as "Doyle Dane Bernbach" and was written by Anne Beatts. If you buy a copy of this issue, you may find the ad is missing. As a result of a lawsuit by VW over the ad for unauthorized use of their trademark, NatLamp was forced to remove the page (with razor blades!) from any copies they still had in inventory (which, from what I gather, was about half the first printing of 250,000 copies) and all subsequent reprints. For what its worth, Ted Kennedy didn't sue.
