Formula Vee race results from Charlotte

« on: May 31, 2007, 09:31:39 AM »
I remember a driver being interviewed about post-race interviews. He said that after a bad weekend a long explanation is necessary to describe the problems with handling, motor, traffic, accidents, etc. On the other hand, when you win, all that needs to be said is "we won!"

We won. Both days. Plus one pole position.

Okay, a few details. If you didn't hear about the outing to the same track in March, we broke on both days in the race. A miserable weekend. Everything worked great this time out, especially the new Carbotech brakes. The longer I drove, the better they gripped, just the opposite of the brand I'd been running. I scrubbed in a set of sticker Hoosiers in the Sat. practice and ran a set with 5 sessions (going in) the rest of the time-part of the reason for not getting pole on Sunday. I wasn't putting a high priority on starting position due to the size of the field. I did, however use the new tires for Sunday's race. Good thing, too, as Shannon came out on stickers. Shannon Jones, always a clean, consistent driver, was my main concern and finished second both days. He's found a wider powerband with a new header system and had better straightaway speed, but my car seemed to be handling better coming out of turns and was pulling him on the straights. He was all over me in the slow part of the track and ran in my mirrors due to some different line choices, but the main point of my strategy was to get out front and drive just hard enough to stay there. I knew I wasn't getting passed as long as I didn't make any mistakes. On lap one both days I was behind Shannon coming out of the third turn and on both days I got inside of him going through 8 (the fast turn at the back of the track). On Sunday, I got help from a Formula Continental (a.k.a. Formula Pinto, because of the Ford four-cylinder engine) who started in the back. He passed me on the straight, turned inside Shannon, and I followed him through.

Other than that, it was just hitting marks and shift points. And not making mistakes!

This weekend: Road Atlanta. A spectator event, and all my driving will be done on Saturday.

Special thanks to VW of Chattanooga and Dale for re-upping our sponsorship agreement this year!

Got a second on Saturday at Road Atlanta to one of the National drivers who decided to crash our party. Good day overall, I guess. I kept the car under me and I got to compare my laps to one of the guys you see on TV at the Runoffs. Interesting, the builders of my exhaust system were there and were very unhappy with how it was performing, so much that they offered to take it with them and fix it. Maybe that's why it didn't want to climb the hill on the backstretch. Thanks again to VW of Chattanooga (Audi, too!) for sponsorship! A new set of tires is over $600 now!

Way to go Man !!!!!!!     Did you let the exhaust go back to the tuners? You never did let me know which engine you were using at Lowes and Atlanta for that matter.   Do you change out tranny's  for different tracks layouts ?  Just curious.

Yes, they took it with them when they left Saturday evening. I used the Noble for both events (the first was at Carolina Motorsports Park, near Charlotte). Lowe's was booked by the National Assoc. of "Stock" [taxi]Cab Auto Racing. Both tracks use the short box, although you wind it out pretty good on the backstretch.

Next races are July 7-8 at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham! Cool track that has hosted AMA superbikes and Grand-Am series races.

Everybody needs to check out a Formula V race!  NASCAR ain't racin' after you've watched a Formula V burn up the track!   8)
