For a good experiance with any air-cooled VW there are a handful of absolute rules:

Don't try to run a 34 carb with a 009 distributor . . . change your oil and adjust your vavles every 2000 miles . . . adjust your points first, then set your ignition timing at 32 degrees past top dead center under full advance and lock it down . . . read the manual AND ask someone who has done it BEFORE you attempt it . . .

Other than that, make as many VW friends as you can and jump in head first.  If you make a mistake, learn from it and move forward.  And most of all, HAVE FUN!  The last one is the easy part.   8)

If you have any questions or need any help, don't hesitate to post here in the forums!
