feeBees for sale

« on: August 07, 2009, 08:58:21 AM »
It'd a sad day  but I have decided to cut my losses and sell my FeeBee. Folks  I'm beat down and can't do it anymore. What I need to know is a fair price considering what I have in her I know I will take a HUGE loss but just about everything is new underneath. We all know she needs a tranny and the gas tank has not been replaced. So your best guess what should I ask? I swear I have never cried over a car but I type this teary eyed  She needs some body work and paint but the interior is in good shape. So honest opinion don't worry about hurting my feelings they are already crushed

yikes.... sorry to hear that you are giving up.  for what it's worth, can't remember how long you have had her, or how much you have spent, but i usually tell people when they buy a beetle, 18 months, $1800 minimum.  A vert just adds to the price tag.  would have to see it to make a fair guess on value.  Wish i could afford her for my girlfriend.  her first car was a 70 vert.... keep us posted if you go through with a price.

NADA does not even have a 71 Super Vert. the low retail on a standard vert is $4725.00 and the low retail on just a super beetle hardtop is $2800.00. I have had her about 4 years but she sat up for 2. I gave $2500.00 cash and a 4 wheeler I shutter to think of the receipts I have at home I am guessing $4000.00 just in receipts and that includes the Johnston motor. IDK I can't even think right now. I need to clear my head. I'm at work and I am sad Lord help the people that walk through the door today

Throw the nada guide out the window,it wont help. Any aircooled vw that you have had awhile and treated well is a money pit. I had alsmost 8k in my 67 and sold it for less than I bought it for. The current market is covered with hack job"resto"cars and thats killing the value of the ones that are not. Ive never seen the car but Like Rick says being a vert helps...needing a trans really doesnt help. If you go through with it be prepaired to lose big on it, there's really no way around it right now. :(

10-4.... now is not the time to off-load.... unless you want to lose a lot of cash investment.  If she's not hurting anything, and you don't have to have the money, hang on to her a while, take  a deep breath and just think on it a while.

Wish i had hung on to a couple instead of hastily trading / selling.  It left me with three non-runnings at one time.... ](*,)

I feel your pain, man. I came home yesterday and the "buy it now" button had been hit on my Westy. I was more sad than happy. I've had it for ten years (longer by 2X than any other auto I've had) and long ago stopped counting the cost (although the receipts are all in a file). Its like losing a member of the family.

I sold my first bug, 72 super, after owning for about 4 years, for $3500.... over $5500 invested.  Since then i shudder to think how many i have bought and sold at a loss....

Makes me want to bust a move on my 64 Bug.  I bought it in the Spring of 1998, drove it until October, been stored ever since.... maybe it's time to get to work on that one.

Dang Anthony !    Be thankful .  You got what you wanted for the Westy without having to resort to being a Arab Trader.

NADA does not even have a 71 Super Vert.

All Beetle Verts after 1970 were Superbeetles. (at least in the US...)
So the 1971 Convertable listed IS for a superbeetle.

Anthony, I had the same experience with the 1976 Westy I just sold, Although I only asked 1/2 of what your's was, (My body was dented and rusty, but the insides were great....)  Guy came from Witchitaw KS to get it...
Maybe it is only green baywindow automatic westy deluxes that get the full price offers...

This isn't a good economy to be trying to sell a car that needs work.  Why don't you just have the tranny rebuilt and the gas tank cleaned and sealed?  The paint isn't that bad and you've got about everything else taken care of . . . get those two things taken care of and you can drive your money's worth out of it.  And if you still want to sell it after fixing those two things, at least it will be a lot easier to sell and should bring a much better price.

As for what it's "worth" depends on who wants to buy it.  One person may look at it as a project or an investment and say $2500 tops.  The next person may come along and fall in love with it as-is and gladly fork over 5 or 6 grand.  If you don't have to sell it quickly, price it high and see what happens . . . it's easy to come down on the asking price, but it's kind'a hard to go up once you've priced it to someone.

But, in my humble opinion, the best way to get your full investment back is to hold onto it, finish it and drive it a few years.   8)

SC, you could buy Feebee and bring her to the "triangle" . . . I have a feeling she would fit in just fine here.

FeeBee's tranny is not worth repairing.  Its got a bad ring and pinion and that alone would total it .  If it only was a syncro  problem that could repaired. For the parts price of the ring gear/pinion alone you just about could buy a rebuilt unit from Mid- America and other places.  You also could look for a used tranny but then you would need  to get some kind of promise / warranty that it would be a good one.  A used unit should be a whole lot cheaper. They are out there you just need to find them.
I'm with Zen on the worth of the car if repaired verses trying to sell it with the problem and I'm finding that more and more people are terrified at the thought of having to deal with a bad tranny on a Bug/Bus. There is a lot of dang good VW mech. out there who can build engines and cars  from Hell , but if you mention TRANSAXLE it sends a wave of fear through their ranks.
There is not many of us old Fart's left to work on those units much less finding decent parts that won't rape the billfold.
Debby, Fix the car and you would more than likely double your money if  you still wanted to sell the car.
If I were in your position , I would be temped to go with a "Store Bought" unit and then enjoy  driving FeeBee for awhile.  Fuel tanks and such are small potatoes.
