Fast lane or slow lane

« on: February 03, 2011, 08:06:10 PM »
I got into a discussion about teaching your kids to drive.

this is on a 4 lane road.  2 lanes go west 2 lanes go east.

One opinion is that you should tell the kid to stay in the fast lane,  it keeps you out of the slow lane and its safer due to not having to watch out for merging cars, and slow drivers.

The 2nd opinion is stay in the slow lane/   Your chances of getting a wreck are lower  since you are driving slower and the wrecks gets worse the faster you go.

I'm not going to taint the discussion with my views at this point. What do you think?  SC

I don't think one is safer than the other. Maybe the fast lane is because of the merging and turning stuff. I think the general rules of the road are that the right lane is the slow lane and the left lane is the fast lane. I was always taught that the left lane is for passing and you should get back to the right lane shortly afterwards.

When I am spee...er..."making up time", I like to stay in the right lane as much as possible to keep a lower profile; I think the cops keep an eye on the fast lane.

The safest thing you can do is not 'pace' beside another car. If you keep the traffic to your side either in front or behind you, you always have somewhere to go, no matter which lane you are in.

"Slower Traffic Keep Right"  That means, drive in the slow lane . . . if you come up on someone moving slower than you, move to the left lane and go around them.  Once there is no one in the right lane going slower than you, move back to the right.  Use your turn sigals for all lane changes and make sure you've put plenty of room between you and the other driver before you change lanes.  Of course, if you on I-59 going to Birmingham, it's just the opposite . . . the "slow lane" there will jar your brains out!

 Use your turn sigals

Optional...especially if you drive a VW without working turn signals...

Very true.  I think to this point it is more of a concern over altitude than lane position.   ;D

Get the kid into a bus.  They'll _have_ to drive in the slow lane and they'll be deathly afraid of rear-ending anyone.  It's a win-win.   ;)

This is how the conversation went down.

I was  ragging  about the stop sign super boy rolled thru and my buddy says that the cops sent him a ticket for speeding  from south ga.  His Kid is at school somewhere in Gnatville.

so we where pontificating about our teaching driving etc.

So he is training his kids to drive in the left /fast lane due to that merge traffic/slow driver etc..  Which I think is ^&%&^ crazy.  I bit my lip and kept my mouth shut since it was what his Pop taught him.  Family tradition in all.

I'm more into the right lane driving and  passing slow drivers. blinkers. mirrors,  look around.  But driving in the left lane just makes you haul arse and get tickets.  SC

Yep.  And on top of that, they'll have to spend so much time wrenching on it to keep it on the road, they won't have any free time to get in trouble.  It's a win-win-win!   ;D

Yeah, kind'a like dogs tend to take on the personality of their owners, drivers tend to take on the personality of their car.  A bus has a "slow down, you're moving too fast.  Gott'a make the morning last" kind of attitude.  Da da da da da da da . . . feeling groovy.  8)

Driving home last night (after the superbowl) I was reminded of the things my Dad says every time its a known "drinking" holiday (new years, the 4th, superbowl, memorial day...etc...). He always warns about watching out for drunks. How does this affect which lane is safer? Well, he told me once about a safety study that investigated drunk drivers going the wrong way on the interstate. Apparently there were enough late night head-ons to conduct a study and it showed that most of the time, the drunk was going the wrong way in the fast lane with their lights off (they thought they were in "their" slow lane".

I tried to find the study, but someone else commented that a drunk might think your fast lane is their only lane on a 2 lane road, another reason to avoid it.

So the lesson is, avoid the fast lane because you won't see the drunk with his lights off as he is barreling down the interstate at you in the wrong lane.

The Germans have a specific word for this phenomenon (go figure) called a "Geisterfahrer".  The problem is apparently bad enough that most of the on-ramps to the Autobahn have signs that alert you to the fact that you're going the wrong way.

From Urban Dictionary:

Translates from German into "Ghost Driver;" a driver who drives on the wrong direction on an autobahn, often with headlights turned off at night. Usually a drunk driver but can also be a thrill seeker, suicide attempt, or horrendous driver error.
