Ever been surprised by your car?

« on: December 12, 2011, 08:54:40 PM »
OK,
I'm not a speed demon, so I just took Gary's word that the 2004 B5.5 Variant was a Super Car....
I have heard that the 6 cyl is a little lathargic, but mine is the 1.8T.
I was doing 85+ in the fast lane the other day and a jacked up Brand new F-150 came flying up behind me and flashed his lights, now the other lanes were full to the brim with cars, so I ignored him and thought "you should have left earlier..." Well he flashed them again and I had it. I floored the 1.8T and zoom. In a matter of litterally 2 seconds I looked down and I was doing ~115 mph and still pulling. Truck was LOOONG Gone. He was embarrased and smoked by a Station Wagon!
It felt good, but I was worried about a ticket... so I have gone back to hypermiling the beast.
If I stay out of the Turbo, I can average 26mpg mixed. If I could just live on the interstate I realistically could average 33+ MPG.
This car doesn't like start and stop traffic or redlights in town.
Gonna get the cat replaced w/ pipe and a larger turbo and a low level reprogram.
Viva no tail pie inspections!
At least those are the plans...

I won't comment on how fast an RS4 can go....

Talk about a surprisingly joyful experience....  ;)

And, yeah, the 1.8 Turbos take a little time to get up to speed on the highway (it's a pretty big car for such a small engine), but once you are there, the passing concept is one it embraces.... I have come to embrace the turbo.... I enjoy the benefits of the one in my Subie every day of the week.....  ;D

I was really surprised at what a stage 1 APR ECU remap did for my car. Being my first 1.8T I thought it was pretty fast when I got it, but the flash takes it from 225 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque to 263 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. Man what a difference! And I still get about 25 mpg.

I remember when I went down to APR in Alabama for the annual BBQ and got it flashed, after I drove it out I took it down the highway for a little test drive. I started accelerating and climbing the hill, then as I approached the top I saw a police car sitting right in the median, so I had to back way off...oh well.

Also, when I was in line for my flash I was talking to the guy behind me who had a pretty nice looking Mk4 Jetta 1.8T. I can't remember which state he was from, but he said he worked at the dealer as a mechanic and one day this lady brought her car in. She had neglected the timing belt and naturally it broke, and when she heard how much it would be to repair she wasn't interested. He made a deal with her to buy the car for about $200, took it home and fixed the engine. The car was clean otherwise, and now he was paying more to have the ECU upgrade installed than he paid for the whole car.

I have an intake and an exhaust on mine (no turbo, VR6) and it can get up there. Second and third gear are really good..I have surprised several people with it. It also can put down the power on the interstate as well.
