End of an Era- Lockharts

« on: November 13, 2006, 08:12:13 PM »
Sad news for some of us, Good news for Jim.
Lockharts VW will no longer be in business by the end of Nov. Jim will retire and "kick back" after 40 + years , about 30 years in the same location.
Starting today he is having a yard sale from hell. Tons of used pieces and parts are up for grabs + 20 autos/ parts cars , good stuff, bad stuff,
Raid the piggy bank, grab up the check book and head on down.
To much stuff to even list here
Jim has to be out by the first of Dec. Property sold
    9:00am till 5:00 pm maybe.
    Bring your truck.

I knew this one was coming for quite some time.  Jim has been sending a lot of work my way here lately and I knew he was going to be closing down after many years of keeping the bugs of Chattanooga going.
As you said David, sad news for a lot of air-cooled folks in the area, but definitely good news for Jim.  This man has worked himself to the point that he's just tired of working.  I asked him if he was going to become one of those highlighter equipped checkers at the Wal-Mart entrance...He said that sounded like too much work to him.  Whatever he does choose to do to keep himself busy, he's said it won't be much, probably something part- time.  As i've said before, much of what knowledge I've accumulated over the years on the air- cooled cars came from Jim and David.  I've been down at his place qite a bit lately, parting out some cars, making mental lists, trying to find some buyers for parts, etc.  It's quite sad, really...as you said David, the hottest place on the face of the Earth in the summer and by far the coldest in the winter, but I'm very sad to see it go.  It is, to perhaps sound a bit dramatic, truly the end of an era.  It was more than just a place to work on Volkswagens.  I've got that now.  Corporate atmosphere, get the work out, suggested selling, blah, blah, blah....With Lockhart's it was different. Every day, Jim would take a moment to tell me what good work I was doing.  When was the last time many of your employers said that to you, and you felt they really MEANT it?  Everybody had time to offer a helping hand when needed, give the advice when asked, and, in the case of Jim and David, educate an extremely inquisitive post-teen wanna-be mechainc who would, more than a decade later, become the factory certified VW technician sitting here today.
I've said it before...
Thanks, David.
Thanks, Jim...whatever you decide to do, I hope you find happiness and a bit of relaxation.
Chattanooga will miss you, man.

Scott, You can roll your tonque back up and put it away. Not for sale. You can try but be prepared to duck. He has more Dasher parts than I do and has excellent aim.

Travis, Jim doesn't have a whole lot of special tools for sale that I don't have already.
I have never seen a align-bore outfit for Type-4 cases. I'm sure someone made one ,maybe ?    Matter of fact ,I never have seen a Type-4 case that needed it.  Yet !    My thought on that is if a type-4 case needs align boring, It probley has something worse wrong with it. There are a lot of good cases out there that are cheap. So why bother.
I do have all the cly.head tools for valve work.
Maybe Jake Raby can shed some light on the matter. :?:

where is this place? i think i went there one time...

not to change the subject... but while i was down in dade city i was discussing the fate of sunray bugs... THAT will be a tragic day for the VW community when that is gone... 800 cars... at least 500 of them vws... and some of the rarest stuff left... it seems as though all the people with the knowledge and the inventory are getting up in their age and either retiring or going to vw heaven.... i wonder what the vw world will be like in 10 years

Tools aren't for sale anyway.  I went down there today and the rain kept me from looking around too close.  I did get to meet and talk to Jim, though.  I don't think that I had ever talked to him...but I have sent many people down there.  Jim said he knew who I was (who's been talking?!).  No, he said he knew who I was by reading my articles in the newsletter.
I'm going to go back down there and look at a few of his late bay buses when it is a bit drier down there.
Lockhart's is on Rossville Avenue in Chattanooga.  Having never been there before today, I had to stop at Mainly Foreign to get directions...I know where Rossville Blvd. is, but had no idea there was a Rossville Avenue.

I got 40 - 50 rods from Mr. Lockhart yesterday for our trophies. There are still several left on crank shafts. I stripped some of them but didn't have time to finish. If you're going back, Travis, how about taking a 14mm socket and ratchet with you and asking him to show you the remaining cranks and rods. There are probably more still covered up back there where the cranks are.

Well, on the bright side, maybe Mr. Lockhart will be able to make it to some of the club meetings. If someone goes down there and sees him you might make mention of the time and place we meet and encourage him to come out and join us. 8)

Hey everybody....
If there are any rods left to be gotten, I'll take care of it.
I'll be helping Jim this weekend so I'll take an impact with me to retrieve them.
Jim's got a lot going on at one time and I think it will make things easier if I go ahead and get the rods while I'm helping with the clearing out so that he doesn't have to mess with them.  Still bunches of parts, sheet metal, etc. down there.

Scott, you beat me to the offer for help.  Same pay! :D
Rick, if you could, find out how much Jim wants for the '77 bus.  I might have a little bit of extra money this next week...we'll have to see.
