Emissons testing in Hamlton County - some addt'l info needed

« Reply #30 on: January 08, 2006, 01:54:11 AM »
Hey Anthony,
I have to renew Sweetpea's tags this month.  I am thinking about the antique tag because she still has the stock motor, but the exhaust, well...it would cost a whole lot to put it back to stock.
What are the mileage restrictions?  I really don't have to worry about where I am driving Sweetpea, because when I do drive her, I am going about some club business or a "VW club sanctioned campout"...or at least to a campout with other VW campers (a bunch of them together could be construed as a club, right?).
I hope I have the luck you did with the DMV.  I usually have TROUBLE with them.

I don't recall any specific mileage actually being on the sheet, despite what the earlier post said. As far as that and the exhaust go, they never even looked at the bus. I don't think I even drove it that day! There doesn't seem to be any provision to physically inspect the vehicle initially or otherwise, and with it being a permanant tag, how are they going to check your mileage??? They'll never see you again. Remember the 63 panel shed with no engine? It got a tag! Moreover, I think they just want you to sign the form and your check so everyone's covered.

I've always had good luck with the downtown office when I've smiled, been friendly, played dumb, and let them ask the questions! I try not to say too much (is it okay that the exhaust's changed?) because then the clerk has to give an accurate answer that won't come back to bite her later. That's probably why they keep the questions to a minimum, too.
Good luck! It shouldn't be a problem!

We have put antique tags on the orange bug and the bus and didn't have any questions asked about either one.  We went to the Bonny Oaks office to get our tags.   :)

Physical inspection?

« Reply #33 on: January 09, 2006, 09:54:20 PM »
I am trying to get it right.   Are they or not doing a physical inspection in Hamilton Co?  I have 3 "old" cars:  a 71 Fiat Spider, an 80 Fiat Abarth 131 (old rally car) and now the 71 Ghia convertible.  The 2 71's should be exempt from emissions testing, right?  Now about my 80 Fiat-- it originally came w/ a catalytic converter but this was removed.  It has fuel injection however.  I wonder how "tight" an emissions do they want to run?  I was thinking, maybe I should just take a chance and take the 80 Fiat for inspection and see what happens?  Or should I just register as an antique and forget about it??  I LOVE to drive my old cars (more so than my newer "nicer" cars!!) and was looking forward to driving them frequently.  What are the restrictions for antique plate cars and how strictly are these laws enforced in case you get pulled over say for a ticket??  Thanks

The only thing that I can answer for you is that there is a physical inspection for a catalytic converter if your car comes up as having one from the factory.  This is done with a mirror on a stick put under your car.  Of course, this inspection is done if you want regular tags on your car...and to get regular tags on your car, you have to have it inspected.
I am going tomorrow to register my '79 as an antique.

Oh, and yes, the '71's are exempt.

We registered our 2 with antique tags so that we don't have to pay the annual tag renewal and the $10.00 annual emmissions test charge.  You pay for an antique tag 1 time and never have to renew it again.  It helps to save a buck whenever you can.  We don't drive either car daily but doubt seriously that the police are going to take the time to stop us because of driving with an antique tag on the car unless we're doing something else wrong.   :)

Well, I got the antique tag for Sweetpea on Tuesday.  Where's the little antique car?  Tag looks all kind of plain and ugly.  After signing the paperwork, I paid and got my tag.  I am shocked that I was in and out of the DMV on Bonny Oaks in about 10 minutes.  It would have been sooner, but they didn't have any antique tags on hand and had to have some brought up from their basement.

Oscar will keep the regular tag...I use him a whole lot.  The Beetle is exempt.  And the Golf and Passat are mandatory, but they both passed last Nov.and Dec.

Well, they do look a lot like the tags from the late 60s to mid 70s, when they first started to use renewal stickers.

Those were plain and ugly, too.

At least they were stamped. The antique tag looks like it was made on a Xerox machine.

Glad you got through with no hassles!

Passed Emissions!

Finally took my 80 131 Fiat Abarth for emissions inspection.  It passed--on second attempt.  I changed the oxygen sensor and that was all it needed.  I recommend anyone with an older car to go to the station by Northgate mall--much less crowded and more "laid back" if you know what I mean.  I failed the first time at Bonny Oaks--long wait and very strict...  Good luck to all of you in keeping our oldies on the road. :D
