Just moveoutside of Hamilton co. I figure the cash cow will catch on soon. But you could be safe out in the country areas for awhile.

emissions testing?

I got the antique tag for my '79 Westy.  One time fee of around $31, no initial emission test.  The stipulations were that the vehicle could only be used for club functions such as parades, car shows, etc.  At no time should it be used for daily use.  Since my camper is only used for going to shows, or for camping at either a VW show or a VW campout, anytime I drive it I am either on my way to or on my way back from a VW club function.  How in the world can they prove that I am not going to or from a club function?  I really don't think they can.  But since I don't drive it every day, it's not that much of a concern to me...I'm searching for wood to knock on now, but I have never been pulled over for an infraction in my Westy...been harrassed at a Nazi checkpoint ("Vere are zee papers?") many years ago...but never pulled over.

My '78 Bus passed emissions with flying colors the first year the testing was in effect.  This year, after the engine "refreshing", the numbers were even lower.  I drive this bus a whole lot more than my '79, so I have the regular county tags on it.

'72 Super Beetle is exempt.

'94 Golf has an OBD (I do believe).  It passed with great numbers.

'00 Passat I know has the OBD.  It passed as well.

what would be the benefits and drawbacks of living in GA as opposed to TN? i know my problems of no titles for vehicles will go away in GA :) but thats about it... what about income tax? what would be the difference there?

TN = No state income tax . . . yet.  They tried to pass a state lottery several times and it kept getting voted down . . . they threatened a state income tax a couple of years or so back and the lottery passed by a landslide . . . and there hasn't been much talk of an income tax since.

GA = 6% state income tax.

GA also charges an "Ad Valorum" (sp.??) tax.  That's a latin term, I struggle with English.  Basically, whoever owns the car on January 1st of each year has to pay a tax based on the value of the vehicle (according to the state).   You pay the tax when you buy tags each year.  Sux to drive a $40,000 Hummer in GA at tag time . . . you'll be paying several hundred dollars tax . . . but the state don't think old VWs have any value!    I think the tax on Homer the Superbus runs about $1.94 a year.  Driving an old VW is my way of "sticking it to the man."    8)

Quite honestly, I don't think that the testing center gives a rat's rear end as to the "coolness" of having an air-cooled beetle built in 1998. They're all about streamlining there: pull forward, sit still, look front, get out, plug in, un-plug, get back in, you pass/don't pass. If it's a '98 car, it has to have the '98 plug is how they'll look at it. The issue is diagnostic capabilty...that little three-pin connector and the 16-pin OBD II plugs are worlds apart...and therefore, interfere with "the man's" system. I don't make the rules, I just try to clarify them almost daily to the irritated masses who can't seem to get their tags renewed. Personally, I have a theory that your Mexican beetle spits less of the "bad stuff" out the tailpipe than does a 2006 Hummer H2.

The Tech speaks true. The inspection guys are not "car guys" and are not interested in making exceptions to their way of doing things in Hamilton Co. or Nashville (trust me, I tried going up the ladder all the way to the EPA).
The funny thing is: while they were trying to figure out what to do with it the first time, they used the "sniffer" and it passed-for a '98 model car!
So, is it really about cleaning our air???
