Drivers side window regulator

« on: June 05, 2008, 12:13:17 AM »
After an hour and a half of work and lubing etc on the regulator i tried to put the window back in. All i got done was cut my arm in 3 places and start throwing tools ( remind anyone of some body here.... :D  ). I went to work mad. When i got home here a little bit ago ( 11:20pm ) the window was in. The wife did it. Now the problem. The regulator is officially dead, with all the work and grease etc the thing just slips and sticks. Does any one have an extra drivers side window regulator that works for a 1969 beetle or where to get one before i do something stupid like spend $125.00 to chainge both windows to a one piece window.......Rob

You "think" you have window regulator problems now . . . wait till you have to try to roll up a one piece window!    And I can tell you from experince that you WILL miss your vent windows when they are gone!  Just replace the regulator and keep the stock glass.  You will be much happier!  I've never bought new ones, I've always been able to find a good used regulator from a junk beetle . . . but then I used to have about a dozen junk ones in the back yard at any given time.  I don't have any right now, but I'll keep my eyes opened for one at the Stevenson show this weekend.  If you want to bite the bullet and buy a new one, here's some I found on line . . .

CIP1.com has them for 30 bucks:    http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D111%2D837%2D501%2DH

Mid-America Motorworks has them for 35 bucks:

On Line Air Cooled Parts has 'em for 42 bucks:

Air Head Parts has them for 30 bucks:

BFY Obsolete Parts has them for 27 bucks

By the way, if I remember right, you have to remove the vent window to replace the regulator.  It's not hard and if you are REALLY careful, you won't mess up the felt channel or scrapers.

I think I would just "bite the big one" and buy a new reg and be done with it.   I don't recall having to remove the vent window/frame. I just took the 10mm bolt out holding the vent . frame at the bottom and snaked the reg between the door and frame. I never took the glass out . I just unbolted it from the reg. and pulled it up to the top and stuck a wedge in to hold it. Just be careful not to damage the rubber scraper.
Zen is correct about 1 piece windows.  I understand that you have to use a different reg. to make them work at all.
As far as to use a "used up" ,Just remember that the "used" reg is about the same age as your now "crapped out" reg.
     Your call :?

Thanks for the info guys. I really did not want to get rid of the vents in place of the one piece windows. Just letting off some steam. As for taking the window out was not the problem, getting it back past the vent post wasI was not able to push it back past it and ran out of time before work. The wife had the time and pulled the vent and reinstalled the regulator and the vent. There is a regulator like i need on Samba for $10 bucks but like Ret. Bugtech said it will be as old as the one i have and could stop working like my old one. I will check with him and see if it works good and then decide if i should buy the new one like i do when old parts go bad. Buy new and they work correctly........Rob

IT WORKS!!!!! The wife and i just finished putting in the new window regulator about 30 minutes ago and it works great. It does have a different feel to it than the passenger door regulator but that i am sure is because it is new. I took the advice from Retbugtech on the window and pulled it up and wedged it there. took the vent loose and then put the regulator in place. After the bolts were in place with some adjusting we rebolted the window in place and the vent and it worked. Something new i learned how to do on it...........

The Samba has a sticky in the beetle forum about one piece windows. It tells you everything you need to know about them: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=227776
