DRIVER OF VW BUG INVOLVED IN CRASH/NEEDS PRAYERS

« on: July 01, 2005, 07:22:45 AM »
A driver of a VW bug was involved in a head on collision with a FedEx truck. He is in serious condition. The link below goes to the site he frequents. Be warned some of the folks use 4 letter words  quite often and it is not LOVE either. Keep this young man in your thoughts and prayers.A fund has been set up in pay pal for those who wish to make a donation. I hope it was OK to post it in General Discussion, if it needs to be moved, please do so!!!!

Thanks

Well, These things are always not very pleasent to see nor easy to deal with. I was a sailor so four letter words are not new to me, but I think in this case its over the top. I feel for this Guy and his family and I truly hope that he recovers OK. Another thing that bothers me, no matter whose fault this was, What about the Fed-X driver. Does anybody care what happened to him? :(  :(

I hate to see something like this. Man that was a nice car too. Anyway my prayers go out to the family and that young man. And David when accidents like this happens people tend to become a little tense about wondering about the Driver of the truck. If it were another car it would be different.. I hope the driver is ok also..  [-o<  many prayers for all....

Correct me if im wrong, In the photo is that the street pavement im looking at just to the right  of the drivers seat ?  Somebody must have been hauling butt to do that kind of damage. I wonder if this Guy was wearing a seat /shoulder belt ?  I read further and saw where the Fed-x driver was taken to the Hosp. also. I bet he got banged up pretty bad considering they are just about standing up when they drive and if the doors were open ,Oh Man!!   Just remember people, You ain`t driving the safest car in the world.  Bug V Fed-x you lose.  Bug V Crown Vic. you lose. Bug V Impala you lose . etc etc. I hope both drivers recover OK

According to Bill Cosby, "Bug versus dog-in-the-road: You lose."

David's right. The last time I disparaged the safety of the Beetle I got in big trouble    so let me just ask everybody-please use shoulder belts! The Beetle driver in question's injuries are consistent with someone who at best was only wearing a lap belt. His head and chest injuries are likely from the secondary collision of his body with something in the interior of the car, probably the steering wheel. The latest postings all sound optimistic for his recovery, which is great! He might have walked away if he had been in a shoulder harness. I don't mean to sound crass by saying that. I just hope we all will consider this in terms of our loved ones and children. In the "problem with modern cars" thread elswhere on this board, someone said something like its one thing to decide how much risk we want to put ourselves in, but another to decide how much we want to put others at risk as a result of our actions.
I'm aware of how this sounds coming from someone going off to take a ride in an 875 pound suppository this weekend, but believe me, by the time all safety precautions are taken, its safer than the drive to the track.
Let's all be careful out there!

I had an Aunt that totaled a 63 Beetle and spent a day or two in the hospital when she hit a St. Bernard!  I was only 6 at the time and I'm sure there was more to the story than that.  Like maybe hitting a ditch or tree after hitting the dog? . . . my dad was dead set against VWs, or anything else made in Germany or Japan, so I have a feeling some of the important details may have been left out of the version of the story I was told.  But at any rate, Mr. Cosby's "joke" has a real basis in truth!

If you look closely at the picture of him and his friend driving his Beetle, it doesn't appear to have shoulder belts . . . and if it does, they don't appear to be wearing them.  Also the car setting that low in front puts the strongest part of the car down below much of anything solid on a FedX truck!  I'm not against anyone driving a lowered Bug . . . or even against anyone driving a Bug without seat belts.  Just understand that both increase the risk of injury in a collision . . . you've got to use that much more caution when you drive it.  Still, the best you can do, you can't control the other driver . . .

I'm glad to hear his condition is improving.  And, although they tend to use a little "bad language" . . . ok, a LOT of bad language, it's impressive to see how his friends and the VW community AROUND THE WORLD have banded together to pray for him and donate money to help pay for his medical expenses.  8)

Not wearing a lap/shoulder belt is just plain dumb. When I bought my brand new 1969 Z-28, I refused to wear the seatbelts. I went flying with a friend of mine in a D-18 twin Beech one weekend and he made me wear seat belts. That very evening I loaded up the wife and kids in the Z-28 to go see the inlaws and I made everyone put the belts on to show that they were not so bad after all. We were about 2 miles from home on Glenwood Dr. when a big old Mercury Turn pike crusier full of kids came out of a side street ,hit one car then head on into me. I was pushed backwards about 50 ft. with stuff flying all over. My legs cleaned off every knob and switch on the dash, but we all stayed put with the belts. When the Merc stopped the doors flew open and kids ran everywhere except the driver ,a 16yo girl that the police didn`t find for 30mins because she was up under dash and wheel. She died there. None had belts on.
This made a beliver out of me.

I definitely would rather have my seat belt on than to take a chance without it.  We really didn't start wearing seat belts until kids came around and now we don't even think about it, they just go on before the car is started.  Something else that seems crazy to me is to ride a motorcycle without a helmet.  Florida doesn't require them and it really bugs me to see them fly by on the interstate without them.
