i thought about it... cause it would probably be a whole lot cheaper than bringing it to NC... but it would piss me off the whole time, so i decided against it... the car has enough other quirky issues that i will have to deal with like:

nice blaupunkt radio powers off at exactly 1 hour EVERY time... but can be powered immediatley back on

the speedo needle sticks... usually at 60mph it will start working again, or you can just flick the speedo under the needle and it will work... odometer works 100% of the time though... so has to be something with the needle itself...

the dealer attributes both of these issues to "the hot climate i am in" well wtf would happen if the car was still in mexico?!?!??!? lol

The way things sound now, it appears that you have been led down "The Garden Path" and you are at the mercy of this dealer. Like some other dealers, they could care less about you and the horse you rode in on.
I'm not sure how N.C. DMV works, but I wouldn't have left N.C. without all the paper work filled out and title in my hand if you paid cash for the car.
I think sending/mailing a temp. tag across state lines is not kosher.
As far as the warr. goes, are you going to drive that thing to N.C. everytime you think it needs work done under warr. ?
I'm suprised they even gave you a warr. on a car thats not legal in the U.S.
If you are as good a mechanic as you say you are, Fix the damn car yourselve before you have a stroke. Are they buying the gas for you to drive up to N.C. and back ?  If not, take a day off and the gas money you saved and do the job.
There is a point that you get to when the " principal of the thing" just isn't worth all the crap you went though. N.C. doesn't care, your car doesn't care and the grass in your yard doesn't care. You are the one thats going to be trundle off to the "Farm" because of some people that don't know what they are doing or even care .

car was delivered to me in fl with the temp tag... i thought the paperwork was complete, but it needed to be notarized... something i have never had to have done in fl... even with a car from NC... the tag agency was picky on this one...

the car is 100% legal in the US... it was imported in to california... which has the strictest laws... so if they accepted it in then i think we are good... it has also been titled in ohio and titled and inspected in NC... the car still has the mexican VIN and is titled as a 1998 beetle.

the car has no warranty... but the oil leak was supposed to be fixed before I got it. I dont have the time or patience to pull this car apart... nor do i know if there has to be anything special done with the FI system... I do not have a VAG COM at this time and don't know if it would be necessary... probably would... but perhaps not if i dont mess with the timing.

this will be the ONLY time i drive the car to NC... and this is not a typical dealer... they also have a restored 78 westy for sale and some other older foreign cars.

really it should cost less than $100 to drive the car up there... we'll see what happens...

VW Girl this is not any of my business. But you sumed it up on the 4th from the last line.Live and learn but all of these things should have been put into the contract and signed by a NP.Then if they said no then you have the option of buying or not.I don't know if they are honering the contract but most car dealers have a 30 or 60 day warranty at the least on a used car.I know it's easy to be a armchair judge but I guess in all the excitement of getting the car the small things may have slipped by.It probably was a buy "as is" as soon as the quirks are out of it it should be fine.I'm guessing a small oil leak, speedometer cable, and a radio booklet to see why the radio turns off in one hour.Probably a short in a wire.Have someone check the ground wire.
