I thought it was nearly new.Looks new.

it's a 98... but it's leaking oil around the oil cooler... not the oil cooler seals cause those have been replace twice this month... so it's either the oil cooler or a crack in the case... my guess would be the oil cooler... at least it better be :x

I didn't know those things ever had trouble.I guess mine is working. The guy I use for internal engine things told me if it's not running hot and not leaking it's working.I need to get some guages in there bad.I have a red light on my tach in case the belt breaks.Don't know if it works.Yes I need theguages bad because I have too much money in that 1835.There aren't going to be too many dunebuggies that run hot unless something is bad wrong.Staying at the speed limit the motor is not ever running any faster than 2.5 thousand rpm.

Does the smoke go away right after it starts?  How many miles does the engine have on it ?  Runs OK ?
I have seen blocks crack from one of the cooler holes straight to the mounting flange then down behind the flywheel and crack across the top of the case to a upper clylinder head stud on #1 cly. Kind of rare.
Back to the smoke. If it keeps on smoking after warm up, take the oil filler cap off while its running and see if it blows smoke from there while reving the engine a little. If it does it could be the rings. If it puffs like a steam engine it could be a burned piston and it might not run so good.
I have seen a lot of VW engines puff smoke on start up and not have any problems.
What size engine does this Bug have ? Being Mexican it could have a 1200-36hp , 1200-40hp, 1300-50hp or even a D.P.1600-60hp. I bet it has a old model swing axle tranny. 8)

the car has 45,000 kms on it... so what is that about 30,000 miles? the dealer i got it from gave me a mileage statement that it had 45k miles on it... but obviously it doesnt since its in kms... but supposedly that never flipped over...

it only smokes right when i start it... it all comes out within like 2 seconds and then its gone... its only done it twice... it has a 1600i in it and yes it is swingaxle... you should see the parts interchange list for this beast... sciroccos, mk1, mk2, passat, polo, list goes on and on...

perhaps i am just being paranoid since my $10k car won't shake it's oil leak.

I wouldn't worry about the oil puff when you crank up. Remember you have horiz. clys and sometimes the oil doesn't drain back in the sump, but collects in the clys when you shut down the engine and burns off when you restart. What are you going to do about your oil leak ? To bad you don't live here where I can help you with it.  Is this engine a dual port or single port 1600cc ?

i could fix it myself if i were the one doing the work, but i paud $10 g's for this beast 2 weeks ago and it needs to be made right... deal was the oil leak needs to be fixed before i get it... it seems to do fine when they test drive it at the shops but then its back....

it's a 1600i which i guess is a dual

i think i was just paranoid about the smoke cause i am pissed about the leak

Where does the oil leak show up?  Slide a piece of paper under the engine.
Could be a single port. 1970 type -1  was a single port 1600. Have they replaced the cooler seals or the cooler it selve ?  Any good VW tech shouldn't have that much trouble finding that leak I wouldn't think.

i dont think the oil leak has ever showed up on the driveway... but its pretty bad now so it might... it's coming from underneath the fanshroud and coating EVERYTHING... the whole left side of the engine compartment is oily :( both shops replaced the oil cooler seals.

i had a dream last night that someone stole my engine... and i cried about it... then remembered that it was a leaky pain in my arse and that i have full coverage and should be able to get a new one   then i was thankful the headache was gone... weird dream nonetheless
