Dead of Winter and no heat!

« on: January 27, 2007, 07:09:22 AM »
So when I put my bus together 2 years ago, I decided that the heater parts were "extra"... I really dont know where all the parts are, nor do I know how they go on at this point... but as I am finishing loading up this morning to head out to the river for the campout... I am realizing that I am going to FREEZE going to dead of winter! 8 hour drive there and 8 hour drive back in a VW Bus with NO HEAT! What was I thinking?!?!?! as soon as it warms up enough that my fingers are not ice cubes I am going to look in to hooking the heat back up! even though from what I hear, a bus's heat ain't all that!

Heat? Heat?  We don't need no stinkin' heat!

Bring an electric heater for the campout.  You can pick one up at Wally World for under 20 bucks that will keep a bus warm on a chilly night.  As for the trip . . . plan it so you do most of the traveling in north GA during the afternoon.  If it turns out sunny, solar heat will keep the frostbite away . . . if it's not sunny, dress warm and wear gloves.  Another, slightly more expensive alternative is a small portable propane heater.

Homer the SuperBus has heater boxes, but one pumps exhaust into the cab.  It's hot, but you have to roll the window down and hang your head out to breath . . . kind'a defeats the purpose so I don't use that one.  The other one doesn't have a lever, but I did manage to jam it open about a 1/4 of the way.  If it's over 60 degrees, I can feel a little heat coming out of the defroster.  After a while, you just get used to no heat.

Well I drove to the Chain Gang at Convict Springs campout yesterday morning when it was about 27, and that airconditioner in the floorboard was FREEZING my toes! So that needs to be rectified as well.

My camping buddy is supposed to bring a heater so we should be good. I managed to sleep quite nicely last night with two thick blankets... so i think i can make do!

can't wait to see you guys next weekend!
