Cost of gas versus the number of shows attended

« on: August 09, 2006, 04:46:55 AM »
With the ever rising cost of gas have you how many shows have you not been able to attend due to the cost? And along the same lines if gas hits $3.25 a gallon or more (which is highly feasible it seems) and stays there how far would you be willing to travel to a show??

I will start off and say I have not missed any because of cost, they have all been because of not being able to get off work.

At $3.25 for regular that would most likely put the premium for the bug at about $3.50 a gallon. So I would not drive the car to any show (why start now anyway?) except for anything within 30 minutes.  LOL. I would have to say I would not want to venture over 2 hours away for shows at the $3.25 benchmark considering the MPG of hauling the car. I would have to adjust mileage traveled according to the increase in cost per gallon of gas. Any long trips that I really want to make (Fun Fest etc) would most likely result in cutting out a show or shows to secure the needed funds to make the trip. Just my take on the situation.

I used to hit up 3 shows a year (sometimes a few more, but 3 for sure): orlando show~n~shine, toccoa, and bug jam weekend...

so far this year i have been to:

Orlando, FL show~n~shine (in the gas guzzlin 73 super) 100 miles
Farfigtubin in High Springs, FL (78 westy) 30 miles
Bugapaluza Chattanooga, TN (78 westy) 450 miles
VW's over the Skyway weekend ST Pete, FL (78 westy) 140 miles
Bugout Manassas, VA (78 westy) 780 miles
Funfest Effingham, IL (78 westy) 780 miles (from manassas)
Volksmas in July Clearwater, FL (98 meximelt) 140 miles
Bugn in July Huntsville, AL (78 westy) 580 miles
High Country Boone NC (98 meximelt to greensboro, 78 westy)665 miles

so somewhere in the neighborhood of 6000 miles so far this year for shows... I still have toccoa and bug jam in the list to go... and will try to hit up the jacksonville shows as well

i dont want to know how much i have spent in gas... thats why i put everything on a credit card and just pay the bill... of course my cc bills have been rather high lately....

As soon as we get everything at the cabin finished up and we move in, I'll have three wooded acres down south of the triangle, WAY off the beaten path.  It's the perfect place to set up a small still.  When they were selling air-cooled Kombies in Brasil (they just went water-cooled eariler this year), they were set up to run on either gas or alcohol . . . so it should be a big deal to set up Homer to run on home brew.

I'm also in the market for an old diesel Rabbit to convert to run waste vegetable oil.

Until then, I'll just stay out of Wal-Mart for a week or two and I should have the funds to go to about any show I want to, as long as regular stays under $4 bucks.  If it goes over $4 bucks, I guess I'll have to liquidate my toy collection. :(  Oh, I forgot, I need to do that anyway.

I haven't missed anything that I have wanted to go to due to the price of gas.  I have to drive a car to go anywhere...and cars need fuel to go anywhere.  I have dropped off any toy collecting (it wasn't a bad habit to break anyway) and the words "credit cards" are not in my vocabulary anymore.
I would say that gas would have to get pretty darn high for me to decide not to go to an event that I want to go to.
Not that I wouldn't complain the whole time I was filling up...

I agree with you 100%. Like I said and as Zen alluded to if there is a show I really want to do the funds can be found somewhere. As far as complaining as I fill up, that started a while back for me!!!

On more angle on this question. Will the high and possibly higher cost of gas be a plus or minus to the local show scene?? I know personally I could see attending more of the  1 day shows, let's say within 250 miles of home than going out of town and spending extra nights.

There has been a few shows that I would love to have went to but time has been more of a problem than anything.

2-day shows? If there's camping, that's definately a bonus. I try to make any 2-race weekends for the same reason: 2 races-1 tow (with the 13 MPG Dodge van).

Gas is part of the equation for not going to High Country this year. There were also time and work considerations, but gas may have just tipped the balance toward staying home.

I filled up in Ooltewah on our way out for $2.85 for regular.  I figured there was going to be a price increase, so I filled up just before crossing the North Carolina border for about the same price.  I didn't have to fill up again until the next day in Asheville, but it was $3.05 for regular.  I had to fill up 2 more times in NC, but one store (on Monday morning) had gas for $2.85 and the next one (Monday evening) was back up to $3.05.  The two full fill-ups were about $30 and the partials were about $20 each.  I figure I spent about $100 on gas.  I don't know what Linda spent...her fill-ups cost more but occur less frequently.
I filled up with the knowledge that I had put some money aside just for gas...I was happy to pay, knowing where I was going was well worth the cost of getting there.
