Other than Kiles Turbo diesel and other mods, you haven't lived until you have driven a original Vanagon diesel. Those things would not get out of their own way. They ran good but you were lucky if you could get them over 55 mph.  Its pretty bad when you are running down the road wide open and a worn out 36 hp Bug comes sailing past you. Just forget about going up a long grade in 4th gear or even 3rd  or even 2nd around here:lol:

Slow doesn't bother me as much. I drove the diesel Jetta for a while and I prefer the better MPG. I'm sure a diesel Vanagon would be slower but not by much.

My son owned a 78' Camper diesel and one time he was driving down the road and couldn't get it to go over 45 mph. Then he realized he didn't latch the top and it had popped up acting like a big wind dam

Wasn't the Vanagon diesel engine the same engine they put in the diesel Rabbit? . . . Homer is slow. I can handle slow. But I don't think I'd like driving a stock diesel Vanagon unless the ground was flat and I had a tail wind.

This van is about 2 miles from my house and after driving by it for about a month i finally stoped and looked at it. It is a nice van overall but not worth the $4000 he wants for it. The owner said he did the engine swap out because it was to slow for him and his wife when they did trips over to the Carolinas to relatives house and other trips for fun. I might give him about $2500 to $3000 but that is stretching it.

S.C,They use nuts and bolts.
Zen, It is the same engine as the Rabbit with a different oil pan and oil pump.
Joe, Just think, If he had the top tied down ,he could have gotten up to maybe 52 mph.
Russ, Your diesel Jetta would feel like a Hemi-'Cuda .
As far as M.P.G. My customer never got over about 20-22 under the best conditions due to having to drive in 2nd and 3rd all the time to get up the hills around here. Sometimes it got less when it got windy or she had more than one person on board.  She made pottery and you can just imagine slow the Van got when she loaded it down with that stuff and try to drive to a show. It finally "blew up" after 28,000 miles . She offered to me cheap but I didn't want to ruin my reputation

Hmmmm, A 78 Diesel. That would be kind of rare.

Joe, Are you sure about that ?  I belive the Vanagon was the first to use the diesel ,at least in the U.S.A. as far as I know. Do you know something we don't know about ?

I thought he said 78 foot diesel. Where you place the apostrophe makes a big difference!
