Cheap way to travel

« on: January 02, 2012, 02:52:03 PM »
Since the VW crowd always enjoys a great deal, I figured I would share this with you guys.I read an article about the Megabus back in October (http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_211989.asp) by Roy Exum and I thought I'd investigate it further. Since my brother and his wife were looking to go to Orlando for New Years, I thought Megan and I might be able to go, if we could find a few ways to cut costs. As the article says, they opened an Atlanta hub in November and offered the first X number of tickets for only $1 each way! I  promptly booked us round trip tickets for $8.50 for the two of us (includes fees). Turns out our return trip was $3 instead of $1...but whatever. They bus boasted WiFi and power outlets at every seat. We were fortunate to pick the one seat that didn't have power, but out neighbor plugged up the laptop. The WiFi barely worked and I wouldn't plan on surfing the whole ride...

Baggage is limited to 1 bag with the sum of its three dimensions less than 62" (L+H+W< 62") and a carry on bag. We had no problem fitting within those parameters.

Due to their schedule, we would have returned to Atlanta AFTER the last Atlanta to Chattanooga bus, so we decided to drive to Atlanta, park along the Marta and rid to the rendezvous point. They do pick up in Chattanooga over near the Rave, but be forewarned that Chattanooga is a stop between Knoxville and Atlanta, so you don't get to pick your seat as easily.

Would I ride it again? Perhaps- depends on where I needed to go, who was going with me and for how long? I was thinking that it would be really great to go pick up a vehicle or drop one off. It was definitely an adventure as we expected, but there are creature comforts we might rather pay for next time. Add to it, the $5/ day to park and then splitting a rental car with my brother and his wife... we could have just paid gas and had them give us half of a rental car... but it was really nice to just sit there and not think for 8+ hours.

I'm not trying an apples-oranges comparison here, but here's another cheap way to go on a trip. Mardi-Gras is coming up!

We went to New Orleans this fall for $35 each one way out of Birmingham. Took about 7 1/2 hours. Dining Car, Club Car, drinks, roomy seats. Car was still in the lot on its tires when we got back. Great trip and you couldn't drive down and park the car ($25 per night) for less!
