I've been thinkning 'bout the high price of gas. Since it's dropped a little over the last few weeks, I'm ready to declair it "cheap" again and find something else to gripe about.
Friday evening I bought gas at the LaFayette WalMart with a gift card and after their 3 cents per gallon discount I paid $1.469. Saturday morning we did some Christmas shopping and I noticed that their gas had dropped to $1.459 before the discount. I was just called to unlock a car there and tonight it's down to $1.419 before the discount. If you use a gift card to pay for it, it's $1.389! Compaired to the $2.039 that I paid for one tank in FL last month, that's pretty cheap.
Another reason to call it cheap . . . Years ago I traded in a '73 GMC truck that got about 8 miles per gallon and bought a brand new 1981 Chevett that got about 30. I still remember the price of gas at the KAYO station in LaFayette was $1.319 per gallon the day I traded it in. The KAYO was, at the time, the cheapest place around to get gas. The day after I bought the Chevette it dropped to $1.299. Anyway, I know for a fact that in March of 1981 the cheapest gas in town was $1.319 . . . almost 24 years later it's $1.389! If I figured it right, the price of gas has inflated about 6% in 24 years. That's about a 0.25% per year inflation. I'm making more than twice what I was making in 1981 . . . close to three times as much. I was getting 8 miles per gallon in that GMC truck. I'm easily getting over 16 in Homer. I've got more than twice as much money and use half as much gas, even after you figure in the 0.25% annual inflation, gas is a bargin compaired to nearly a quarter century ago.
Another reason I feel that gas is cheap? Ever bought a bottle of water at a convienience store? At 89 cents for a 16 ounce bottle, your paying over $7.00 a gallon for water! Gas is cheap. I gott'a go to bed. The sleep deprivation is getting to me . . . :tard:
