Can someone explain why toyota accelerators are sticking?

« on: February 14, 2010, 08:30:19 AM »
First is was .  the floor mats are bunching up and the gas pedal was pushed

then I saw  some pictures in the paper about installing a washer on the pedal arm.  Which did not make alot of sense to me.

then they say they are flashing the speed control module when the add a 5 cent  washer to the pedal arm.

Is the pedal arm too flimsy?  is the return spring to the throttle wimpy.

Inquiring Cats want  to know!...

What a great site.  Thanks Swagginjello.   How the heck do they open the  throttle body.  with an electric motor?  My Camry is a 96  and I think it has a cable that opens the THrottle.  this electonic design seem stupid. How can it be cheaper than 89 cent cable? SC

I think your Camry is safe. I believe the latest problem is electronic . Fly-By-Wire throttle.  BMW has had it for awhile and I don't think they are having any problems.  Volvo has had it since 2001 I think and They have had a few problems with it but If something happens the Volvo unit goes into " limp home mode" Volvo in Knoxville tried to put the screws to my ex for $1200 to fix this thing until the factory said give her money back because it was under a silent  recall warr.

My understanding is that the toyota fly by wire system is succeptable to radio interferance from consumer add ons or cell phones, etc.

I predict that the recall to put the spacer under the pedal WILL NOT fix the problem.

I hope I am wrong, but we'll see.

Some models suffer from drive-by wire set-ups that are hanging up / open.

Some others have pedal assemblies that are getting stuck.

Some of them had pedals that were hanging up on floormats.

Same Sympton, different problem depending on which kind of toyota you're talking about.

VW has used this system for a number of years, no real problems.  My 2002 Golf uses a drive-by-wire throttle valve assembly.  Never had a problem out of it, nearly 115,000 miles on mine.

Oh, and don't forget the Prius cars that lose braking abilities...

or the Honda Fits with the electrical fires in the doors...

I seem to be right about this in that at least 7 or so "fixed" toyota's have done this again after being repaired.
Don't flame me, I have a toyota and they USED to be great cars, now they are just OK.

The paper said yesterday that toyota won't let anyone read the cars EDR  electronic data recorders and that there is only one PC in the USA that has the software to read them .  Toyota will only give a print out of the edr, if court ordered and then they black out any data that they are not made to give.   Hmmmmm  is there something to hide in de little black boxes?  SC

But toyota says there is nothing wrong with their cars and they are perfectly safe... at least that's what the one commercial with the lady and her three kids said...

I don't know, I have never owned a toyota... Just VW... but I can tell you about some recalls... although none of my three 87 cabriolets were recalled in the 1987 cabriolet problem of imploding gas tanks... glad I was safe there!  ::)

in an effort to rescue drivers from the high cost of gasoline, Toyota has announced the introduction of the Toy, the first car for grownups that is operated like a child's pedal car.

Its main benefit is, of course, that it requires no gas. There is, however, a limit as to how far the vehicle can travel on one adult's leg power.

The resourceful auto giant maintains that the encumbrance is not a drawback at all, because adults can change places at the wheel. While one pedals, the other can rest.

The company also proclaims that the new car is the first that "conditions you while you drive." As a result, it claims that the vehicle will benefit all purchasers with improved heart health, greater longevity and, most vital of all, increased energy to pedal all the farther.

"We view the Toy as our most advanced product," the chairman of Toyota avowed. "It's way out in front of even our own hybrids in term of fuel efficiency, and it saves a lot of steps in the production of ethanol. Now, drivers need only eat corn and soy beans to generate energy to propel the vehicle."

One of the first owners of the Toy was ecstatic. "I can't tell you how good it feels to pedal past a gas station and know you no longer have to pull in and empty your wallet. But pedaling for miles can take some getting used to. When I work up a sweat, I'm really happy that the Toy comes with air conditioning. I just reach out and start to crank the dashboard-mounted fan."
