Can i cut my roof off

« on: October 01, 2008, 09:04:38 PM »
My kids rolled my Subaru station wagon 3X.  The kids are ok.  The car is a little smushed.  I want to cut the roof off and install a roll cage.

Am I crazy or is this do able?  SC

You ?crazy??? no way!!! I'm guessing it's a unibody car so no. Bt if the roll cage also supports the missing top then yes.

Dang !!!    I'm glad your young'ns are OK.   Sure you can cut the top off if you want the car to fold up in the middle. Just think ,you would have the only car that was "Slamed" in the middle instead of the front axle.

I had the bright idea of putiing a targa top in a scirroco back in the day. Trust me it might look cool but it wont work for long.

What about a Plexi Windscreen

« Reply #5 on: October 05, 2008, 08:08:39 AM »
OK  im chilling on the roof cut.   What is the rule about putting a plex winshield  on.  I fear the window frame , as it is,   maybe too irregular to affix with a std 84  suberu windshield.    Can I get away with a home made windshield ,  Like a rail buggy,    or will Law enforcement frown at my creativity?   SC

Any one know if I can bono a plexi windscreen to this wreck and drive it again?  IS there a rule or law against it?

I'm not sure what the legal ramifications of driving that thing on public roads would be but IMHO it should be considered an "end of life vehicle".   Given the level of damage to the body I don't think that it would survive another "incident" even with substantial modifications.

If you want to do something fun and interesting with it put the drivetrain in a Beetle    :D

Slap some plexi-glass, or better yet, lexan in for a windshield and go play in the woods . . . you wouldn't have to worry 'bout scratches and dents so it should be a blast.  I wouldn't drive it out on the road though.  Like dubtech said, given the level damage, it wouldn't fair as well in another incident.  Unibody vehicles get their strength from their entire structure being one solid piece.  The curves and ridges that are stamped into large pannels aren't just there for looks, they are designed in to make the pannels stronger.  Dent's and creases in the wrong place make the entire structure subject to collaps at the slightest pressure.  About the only way to "heal" it would be find a donor body and put all your mechanicals and interior in it.

Looks like it did it's job though . . . it sacrificed its own body to keep the occupants safe.  I just don't think it could do it again.
